For Damian Lillard's case, he kept transferring to different schools. He was 5"5" in his freshman year that grew to 5"11ft tall. Going to 3 different HS before his important summer season before senior year hurts his recruitment as he kept bouncing to different school because of lacking of playing time and because of the high cost of a private school in his Soph year that he transferred to a big class sized public school. If he had gone to a better "basketball school" in the Alameda / Oakland area, he might get more notice. Who knows? If he had grown more taller before his senior year, maybe more offers would come his way. He wound up growing three more inches to his 6 "2" listed height.

A related question is whether they were going to be stars regardless or whether they became stars because they were motivated by being overlooked. Either way, glad they put in the work and we get to watch them do what they do on court, now.
