For those who don't know, he arrived in 2002 with almost zero English. For a 22 year old adult from China to become fluent and minimize his accent enough to make a coherent 15 minute speech with humor and humility is the most impressive thing he's done in his career. I spent 9 years in China as an American Born Chinese and can't match 25% of the vocabulary he has mastered. Much respect, Yao.

Many don’t realise his impact on the NBA. Because of him he basically converted a whole nation which had nearly no relation to the United states, into a country of which over 50% of views to the NBA come from there. He is the reason over half the Chinese NBA fans love the rockets and all these mega superstars like Shaq, kobe and LeBron. On top of that when he came to the states he spoke zero english, so for him to than get up 15 years later and speak fluent english which encompasses passion, emotion, humour and humility, shows to me the true character he really is. He battled with racism, hate and being a kid all alone in a business where many Chinese athletes were unheard of. This 15 minute speech alone made me have more respect for him than his whole playing career, just because it shows the true side to Yao. Thankyou Yao Ming!

Why was he hated so much because he was Chinese?
@michaelscatt18075 жыл бұрын
@@deeznutz8320 yeah because he came from an asian leauge which black basketball players looked at pretty much as players not good enough to be in the NBA. When Yao came over they thought the only reason he made it to the NBA was because of his size and thought he would never last against "real basketball players"

Michael Scatt amongst center position players, no doubt he was one of the greatest on skill levels. Let’s not be ignorant about it
@user-tz9jh6pv2j2 жыл бұрын
Not the greatest in skill? If he had another 4-5 seasons, I'm 100% sure he would make it to top 5-10 centers of all time. He didn't play long enough. But if he played another 4-5 seasons at the same level, he easily gets in top 10. Top 5 if he won a ring or two. Name another big man who could play like a BIG MAN in the post with the post moves, hooks, turnaround jumpers, and just back you up and dunk over you, shot 90% from the FT line, and block the f**k out of the entire league, and lastly, can hold Shaq and make Big Ben look like a child.

Yao Ming improved his skill every season in the NBA. The season prior to his playoff injury, he was unstoppable and the best Center in any given game. There was media debate on best center between Dwight Howard or Yao Ming. Any serious NBA fans would know the answer is, Yao Ming. former NBA Commissioner, David Stern, stated Yao Ming deserved the HoF honor for his involvement in expanding the popularity of basketball in China and bridged NBA for future success. He was/is the NBA ambassador of China.
