I see a lot of potential with these “groupings” in the NBA Cup. They could be the new “divisions” like in the NFL. Rivalries could be reborn through this. A potential reward for these groups could be a guaranteed playoff/play-in spot IF the last 2 spots are tied between 2 teams. For example, let’s say in the East at the end of the season both the 76ers and the Magic finished with a record of 30-52. And they are both the 10th and 11th seeds. If the Magic have a better record in the “East A” groupings during the tournament, they automatically have the tiebreaker and claims the 10th seed and a spot in the Play-In tournament. But if both teams don’t even qualify for the Play-In tournament then the standings stand as usual.
