I was an NBC officer and also trained in chemical munitions disposal. In the early 1980s, soldiers in my regiment participated in a classified NBC exercise. The findings of which were so devastating there were a number of urgent and significant changes, leading to the introduction of some good equipment (the Mk 4 suit, the S10 respirator with drinking straw, and the Chemical Agent Monitor (CAM)), some bad equipment (the NAIAD chemical warning device - great idea but tended to false alarm in the presence of things like Brut aftershave*) and the downright ugly (the facelet). There were a number of changes in drills too, and the defecation drill was binned as it was found during the exercise that it was simply impossible to do without cross-contamination. The exercise was so informative because it was covered in umpires and there was zero tolerance for people saying things like “well for real I’d…”. One lapse and you were declared dead and taken out of the exercise. In one such exercise I found myself promoted from 2Lt to being the regimental CO because I was literally the last officer left… * mind you, perhaps the NAIAD was simply alarmed on the grounds of good taste…

I remember in 2003 we were REALLY operating in an NBC environment. During the initial invasion of Iraq, Sadam was shooting missiles and rockets that were NBC capable. Some shot down but some were not shot down. Every time we got warning of an incoming we had to go into the maximum MOPP posture. Mask, over boots, gloves, suit, etc. I remember being 50/50 watch (half the unit awake watching the men who sleep) and trying to sleep in the mask. It was ungodly hot in Saudi Arabia even at night. I remember the mask becoming such a horror that I’d rather take it off and risk death than having to exist in it for another hour. Which many people did. Thankfully none of the incoming contained anything other than conventional explosives (Or so they say). Chemical weapons are a nightmare… but so is existing and trying to live in a MOPP suit.

My Uncle was in the Canadian Army during the 80's and relayed the following anecdote regarding NBC exercises. Bloke gets out of his wagon to answer the call of nature, disappearing behind a clump of bushes. Now bear in mind that the overall type suits were rather clumsy so urgent needs of this type often meant drills went out the window. A few minutes later our lad finishes and stands up, only to suddenly howl like a man posessed and shout: "I'VE SHAT IN MY HOOD!"

Another little detail we were taught. The gloves are supposed to be worn under the MOPP shirt sleeves… but we were taught to put a “cuff” in the end of the gloves (which were gauntlet style and were long). So if chemical agents get on the hands and you raise your hands over your head… the “cuff” will catch the contaminated liquid and not allow it to run into the shirt sleeve. There was also training for “first aid” while wearing MOPP. How to give CPR while a casualty has a mask on. It involved manipulating the arms into a “Superman pose” and then bringing the arms back to the chest with the intention of raising and lowering the rib cage and expanding and contracting the chest and lungs to get air to flow into the lungs and be expelled with only external manipulation. There was also a BVM (bag valve mask) like a civilian emergency room would use that would attach onto the mask fittings. While defecating in MOPP gear… everyone knows what I’m talking about here even if they don’t admit it, but in Iraq often the ground was rocky and there was no digging a hole. You just crapped on the ground and we were wearing the MOPP suit in a low level MOPP posture (suit on, mask stowed and carried but in carrier, gloves stowed in mask carrier , over boots within 15 minutes, etc). The suit we wore had “suspenders” and the end of the suspenders would invariably fall right into your pile of crap. Often guys would not even notice it until they tried putting them back on. It sound funny and gross but the way they were designed… it happened a lot. Vomiting is another situation you need train for. How to clear a casualty or your own mask if you vomit. Small “chunks” and liquid can get blown out the mask outlet rubber valve but they can also cause the mask to no longer seal. We also took a label maker and made stickers to affix inside the mask “eyepiece” visible when looking at the mask from the outside. These labels contained name, blood type, etc. so that gaining access to the dog tags wasn’t necessary (because it involved opening the MOPP Suit). You could look at the sticker and identify the man because everyone looks the same in MOPP. We also had special battery powered “voice megaphones” that attached onto the standard mask port that amplified the voice so it was more understandable while using a radio. We wrapped our wrists with chemical detection paper. We got small pox vaccinations and prophylactic medications for anthrax. We carried 2 Pam chloride and Atropine as nerve agent treatment. Occasionally guys in the BN would get inadvertently “stuck” with the autropine (they were contained in auto injection pens) by accident. I still have nightmares of the hand and arm signal (two arms making fists raised over the head and then down to the shoulders multiple times while shouting “gas gas gas” and voice alarms… NBC is a nightmare. Not even the chemicals nuclear biological or radiological threat… but just wearing the mask. ‘Shudders’.

@@ptonpc Existing in the mask is misery… fighting (physical exertion) in it is even worse. I have heard they now make “blowers” or a mechanical unit with a fan and a battery that puts positive pressure through the filter into the mask so breathing is easier. Without it. The standard filters we used… it feels “difficult” to get a full lung full of air. Like you are breathing through a straw and it requires much more effort and “work” for the lungs to pull air through the filter into the mask. In extreme heat the mask almost can “fill up” with sweat (this is just an exaggeration because any liquid will be expelled out the outlet valve). The reality is that you are very seldom in the maximum MOPP posture. That’s the thing with the MOPP levels. They can be tailored to the situation. From having all the NBC ensemble stowed and readily available but wearing nothing… or just the mask if your only threat is “lung irritants” that are non life threatening like CS gas (tear gas or pepper spray etc)… or just wearing the over suit and carrying the mask and gloves in the carrier with over boots within 15 minutes… etc etc… it’s all depends on the threat and the environment and the commanders. It is very similar to “overhead scuba diving” or “wreak diving” or “confined space scuba (or rebreather)”. In those environments… if your equipment fails… you are in a world of hurt. Some of the threats are neutralized quickly with exposure to the environment like CS gas… a strong breeze and the chemical agent is gone and you can breath easy… other chemical agents are “persistent” meaning that once a liquid (even it microscopic droplets carried by the winds) lands on a surface… it does not evaporate and it is resistant to UV radiation etc etc and if you touch a contaminated surface hours or even days after application it’s still capable of inducing casualties.

US chemical suits from the 80s & 90s were 2-piece, with snaps on the back to keep the top from riding up when you bent over. Drinking with the M17A1 mask was pretty simple, you tested the canteen cap with detector paper and if it was clean you inserted the drinking valve, blew into it, and let the water blow back out through the mouthpiece. If the cap was contaminated you didn’t decontaminate it, you “obtained an uncontamjnated canteen.” Or you went thirsty. With the tanker/aircrew masks there was no drinking tube, you had to loosen the (uncontaminated) canteen cap, take deep breaths and hold, with eyes closed, then unseal the mask, lift it away from your face, put canteen under hood without touching the inside of the hood, mask, or your face, take a swallow or 2 of water while still holding your breath, pull down mask, clear and check, then breathe. Repeat if you’re still thirsty. The 2 piece suit made defecating somewhat simple, you just had to make sure not to let the inside of the top touch the outside of the top or pants. Or anything else. You were supposed to fold it up on itself to keep it away from your skin, do the deed (including wiping), decontaminate if you think you got contaminated, then reattach the suit. Then bury and camouflage the waste. Since the likelihood of contaminating yourself was fairly high, it was recommended to just go in the suit.

As you stated, but perhaps not strongly enough, is that when it comes to radioactive material, the most dangerous is what gets into the body through ingestion or inhalation. For example, an alpha emitter outside the body is effectively harmless. But inside the body it can easily be a death sentence. So the key is to keep nuclear material away from the body, which is what these suits are all about. Naturally this doesn't address gamma (and to some extent beta) radiation that might be present in loci, but that's a secondary military consideration, given that those are present only near the epicenter of a blast and in the primary fallout path. Conveniently the requirements for chemical and biological agents materials is similar, i.e. avoiding all contact with skin and ingestion. As to the 21 day usability of the suits, I'd take that with a massive grain of salt. The Really Bad Stuff would work its way in much faster than that, unless one were beyond religious in following the guidelines. Just the act of urinating with anthrax on the suit would likely be the end of the line, because of contact exposure. But anything is better than nothing, right? PS. For civilian purposes, having a bunch of full body Tyvek bunny suits, full face masks and rubber gloves will offer protection to most NBC agents, provided that one knows how to use the equipment correctly. The military can't go that basic though, as they are expected to fight a war in all that protective equipment as well.

Plus the US military has been using an adapter for their canteen, almost like the camelback water carrier have, a tube is connected to the canteen and it is connected to the mask.

Why on earth I enjoy your videos so much, I have no idea, but you ended up top of my KZbin list. Axe sharpening was second.

Comparing the equipment and procedures shown with the equivalent civillian hazmat precautions really highlights how expendable these people were. The suits themselves have no indicator that they've become saturated with chemicals other than the wearer noticing symptoms of exposure. By then, it's not time to get a new suit, they're just a causality. Similarly, they have openings at the neck, wrists, and ankles. Without a dramatic overpressure from an on-board pump, those absolutely will allow cbrn contaminants to enter the suit. As for the eating, drinking, and waste procedures, there's no safe way to do that in 'the field'. Holes in the plan primarily take the form of exposure to saturated air after decontamination. Whether it's the water bottle, the food you're eating, the spoon, or your own genitals, you're absolutely getting unfiltered outside air into your suit. The fact that they're paper-thin is just icing on the cake. It's not like soldiers' uniforms are designed to be rugged from extreme wear and tear or anything. Most of these problems could be solved by an aggressive positive pressure system, but as it stands, they don't actually meet the standards of US level C Hazmat suits. Kind of a nightmare- if you have to actually rely on one of these suits, you likely only have a couple days to live

Fun fact: the slang term for CBRN suits in the Canadian Armed Forces is "Bunny Suit". No, I don't know the story unfortunately lol

Don't worry, we all are. Even with all the anti-Flir tricks in the world, I can't help but feel something would leak through and a drone would just do its business from 5 miles away anyway, and you'd never know where it came from.

Ah I remember the NBC facelet. A complete failure of credibility. Even though it might have worked, the cheap design meant you looked like a Donald Duck impersonator. We couldn’t train in it because the lads couldn’t take it seriously. If it had been shaped like an N95 mask there would have been much more believable.

Saw a lot about wiping your gloves and whatnot, but I didn’t see anything about wiping after defecation in the instructions. Ew.

Yeah, but to be fair I'd rather be Ewww and miserable for a few days than possibly risk going down eternally in unit history as "The poor SOB in XYZ Company who Mustard Gassed his Ass and Balls". If it was a Nerve Agent like Sarin or VX I contaminated myself with, I'd be too busy to care at that moment gasping for breath, while having a severe seizure and defecating myself anyways as my CNS loses control of my muscles until I finally get to the point my nerves are saturated enough they've become paralyzed and my body just locks up, ceasing all movement except for a slow wheezing gasp, until even that's ceased. Pro tip: You're in a MOPP environment and all of a sudden your nose starts running, and you notice there's more spit in your mouth than usual. Punch in your Atropine Auto-Injector and start making way for the Decon and Triage area. Nerve agents are like Carbon Monoxide poisoning and Oxygen, your body can't tell the difference and absorbs both as if they were the same thing. So Atropine is a vaccine, not a cure; so you need to take it while there's still receptors left for it to use. If they're all already bonded, there's nothing you can do.
