You're right, but the problem is that I think the NBA scouting system is biased to players based on their biological age without any regard for their personality or learning style which is like so many other aspects of our authoritarian power structure. The "experts" in power think they know everything and make assumptions based on their own prior experience without regard for different ways of thinking or the possible development of anomalies that diverge from the norm that people are accustomed to. At the time, college athletes were considered the more seasoned picks over foreign and high school players. Logically, that's understandable but that doesn't take into account personal history or learning style. Iverson and Bryant to some people could be seen as the same player, shooting guards who jack up shots, until you talk to them and realize they came from opposing economic backgrounds (Iverson, poor; Bryant, rich) and while they both had to train and practice to improve their skill, I think it could be said that Iverson due to the violence and poverty surround his existence, getting to the league was like a sigh of relief given all the trauma he had been through whereas with Kobe getting to the league was more like an exciting moment of anticipation without any negative trauma added since he grew up in what some might consider a safer area (Europe and then suburban Philadelphia as opposed to Iverson growing up in Newport News, Virginia). I also think Kobe and Allen's dramatically different lifestyles growing up showed a window into just how broad the African-American experience is depending on geography and your family's economic standing.

The Eagles stunk in the 80s and 90s, and it would've been hard to follow them in Italy. On the other hand, it was common during the 90s for younger people to wear jerseys of great players from any team.
