I cried BUCKETS during his Eurovision performance. Everyone who had that experience of rejection and exclusion when they were kids for being in any way “different” knows it intimately and he sold the emotion of that experience like nothing else. The melody is resonating with a lot of people, so even if it is "cake" simple (which I don't agree with), it is a good one, and the vocal range reaches just over two octaves from the lowest to the highest note. I agree that this is easier than some pop songs that became hits, but you're wrong to say it is easier than most of them, let alone 89%.
