I think the nicest thing about AGT is that they manage to fill a huge studio with people who seem to actually want the best for the contestants. With so much judgmental negativity everywhere you turn..it’s just nice to see a room full of people enthusiastically cheering for people they don’t even know.

That's not really traditional attire - or if it is it might be inspired by one smaller people group/tribe. But there is actually a movement in China to bring back traditional Chinese clothing. A lot of young people join in. Traditional attire is called "hanfu". There are shorts/tiktoks of people wearing it around. It is really beautiful.

I read some older Chinese would even mistake them for the Kimono early on. I know there is some controversy about the Hanfu vs the Korean Hanbok

@@andjkh I'm not really sure what you're talking about. In the early 1900s and in the few centuries prior to that, it was actually the Qing dynasty fashion that predominated. The Qing dynasty and the ruling class were from Manchuria. During the several hundred years of that dynasty, fashion was traded between the Manchu and Han peoples, but they also at times forced the Han people to adopt the Manchu fashion, such as forcing men to adopt the queue hairstyle, which was when they shaved the front of their heads and braided the remaining hair into one long braid. This was not always appreciated by the Han people as it was seen to be a way of repressing them (especially the men's hairstyle which was considered a humiliation.) The dresses they wore during the late Qing dynasty eventually developed into the more modern Qipao commonly associated with China of the 1920s. You can see elements of the Qing dynasty fashion in the simple uniforms worn during the Mao era as well. The current fashion trend for Hanfu is hearkening back to the dynasties prior to the Qing dynasty, when the Han people were able to freely wear their own traditional clothing - hence the name "hanfu" (literally "Han clothing").

It's not who she is, where she's from or what she's playing. It's when she played those traditional instruments in an untraditional way that people noticed. As in the Romans who created the language and yes also the Hispanics who think their Latinos music) African music and Native American music on a regular basis? I doubt it.
