The fact that it had zero effect apart from that same model of neglect and sadism is the standard for prisons in America. Apparently they're all like that now. I have zero hope for humanity, because we take a crisis and expand upon it to make it profitable at the cost of countless lives. Riker's is a death camp, it is still a death camp, and it is still being used to put innocent people with fingers crossed that they die before a judge can see them, let alone order release.

This prison is the reason why crime is so rampant in New York. This prison so handedly created these monsters and then put them back in society. These men became worse criminals after experiencing rikers Island than before they went in. You want to talk about the cause of crime and poverty and violence in our city? You can point the finger right at our justice department. There is no kind of control or understanding of how to house these prisoners and keep them from becoming worse prisoners.

Blame the prison and not the behavior of the criminal that ended up there. Rikers Island would be 100 safe if inmates were kept locked in cells and not free to roam around attending activities like they are in a college campus. Rikers Island is safer than any housing project in the hood and these inmates know it.

You don't get it, most people at Rikers have never been convicted of any crime. Most never will be. The average detainee at Rikers will be incarcerated there for a year and a half before they ever see a preliminary trail judge to get a hearing date. many if convicted receive sentences for less time than they have already served waiting to go to trial. So if you are not rich the NYC justice system works like this. Be accused of a crime, get arrested, go to jail, serve your sentence and then go to court to be adjudicated guilty or innocent. If guilty go straight home from court because you have already over served your adjudicated sentence. All of which is totally unconstitutional yet the city and state get away with it. Because the victims of the system are poor.

Our recidivism rate is over 50 percent, and the conditions in prisons are so bad that the UN issued the United States an inhumane prison conditions violation. When you hear that this island that houses more prisons than any other prison on every state in the U.S having poor conditions over crowding,Thats to show that their is no maintenance their to fix up the prison or even upgraded ones in a while,Obviously it doesn't have to look pretty it's just needs to look nice and clean with no paint pulling off. They shouldn't have to let any prisons rot like that which the ones that are rotted should be shutdown and build a better prison that can at least help people which needs a behavior class and give them a inside community job that can keep them busy and obviously a T.V so the inmates won't go crazy with out one and let them outside to let them walk around and play basketball besides being in a little cage bring outside doing nothing. America prisons shouldn't be like a third world country.

yeah its not that simple. Guards at Rikers use their sick time to work part time security jobs. Its part of the NYC union grift mentality. The union is going to go to bat for you no matter what. They have negotiated a system designed to be easily abused so they do. However because they abuse the system it creates the safety issues that they then complain about and paying both overtime to the guards that do show up to cover for the guards that don't plus the sick pay for the guards scamming the system puts a strain on the budget leading to shortfalls for tools and repairs that they complain make doing the job less safe. The poor conditions caused by all the scamming keeps the inmates, some of them actually dangerous, in a constant state of agitation, the heat, the jail is not actually air conditioned in most inmate areas, lack of food and fear for their safety do to a lack of supervision creates an atmosphere of abuse leading to frequent inmate outburst creating higher than usual assaults Its a perfect circle.

As someone who has many friends in LE, the biggest issue with many prisons is lack of professionalism amongst the staff. You can't run a well-controlled, disciplined establishment if your staff does whatever they want. Corrections officers need to be paid better, trained better but held to a much higher standard of conduct with much more severe penalties for failing to meet that standard. And from a friend who works at Riker's, yes, staff abusing sick leave was very much a thing. He had been there for six months as a CO in 2021 and said that the abuse of sick leave existed both before and after the new contract and that it was so widespread that CO's would joke about it. Discipline is critical in LE, the military or any similar job field. His opinion, going there as a CO after six years in the Army, was that there was a complete lack of discipline and accountability amongst the staff. The problem is, how do we hope to have inmates that will be rehabilitated if there isn't basic discipline and accountability amongst the corrections staff overseeing them?

Just maintain a large enough, well-trained staff to handle the prisoners and segregate violent offenders from other people because, clearly, they can't control their aggressive tendencies. Non-violent offenders shouldn't even be incarcerated. There are other ways to deal with them that would penalize them for their actions with- out destroying their lives. It's hard to believe things had to degenerate to the extent that they have !? Doestoyvsky said: "The degree of civilization in a Society can be judged by entering it's prisons" ....

@@chrisandrews414 oh no that is not true in NYC. In the city those are reasonably well paid union jobs, with full benefits. The issue is the way the contracts are structured you would have to be a fool or overtly dedicated not to abuse the workplace system. NYC Prison guards typically use their unlimited paid sick time to work second jobs in private security. Everybody knows about it. This means that the guards who do come to work normally get hella overtime covering for the guards who are out scamming. So you got scamming guards getting paid twice and other guards making time and a half for every hour over thirty hours. Its institutionalized grift
