Polls are usually done by phone, and have a sampling anywhere from 500 to 20,000. They try to put together a cohort of a broad sampling of people in different areas, for the national polls. Even with small numbers of responses, they can get a pretty decent picture of what the overall thinks. Just remember, the only poll that really decides anything is when you go and vote.

Please organize a national primary in the next week, would you? Print up, and design for electronic voting machines, about 40 million ballots today and get them out on trucks to all the states. Make sure they conform to each state's laws about how a ballot must be constructed. That includes translating the ballot into however many languages California and perhaps other states require. You decide who gets on the ballot and who doesn't. Set up polling places and get the requisite volunteers in them on, say, July 30th. Think you could do that for us? Biden needed to pull out 18 months ago to have this go smoothly. Why he took the Trumpian "I alone..." attitude is hard for me to explain. The Democrats now have a logistical as well as political problem. Not saying they can't pull this off, but it is very complicated.
