Excellent series - I applaud your honest comments on the way many farriers have been taught vs. what is really necessary for the horse. Hopefully, they are watching this as well...(!).

I have alot of respect for the way Gene challenged his previous ideology and education...He was willing to reformat his whole approach based on new understandings of hoof form and function.

Because in nature... Horses do land toe first as we would do running on rocks barefoot....why do we as trimmers try to get a heel first landing....

I had almost no talk volume either. I opened my master volume control and moved the wave balance all the way to the left, now I can hear the talking (:>)

Sir, if you have found that barefoot horse's do the same, if not better than shoed horse's, than why not be a barefoot trimmer? I don't understand it! There have been studies done that show just how much the hoof becomes compromised because of shoes. You seem to really care about horse's, and so I just don't get it!

There are certainly benefits to the foot when it is left barefoot and there are a lot of horses that Gene works on that are not shod. However, you have to realize that most of the "studies" that show how a foot is compromised with shoes are done on feet with poor shoeing. There are many examples of poor shoeing that severely compromise the quality and function of the foot, just as there are many examples of poor barefoot trimming that have severely compromised the quality and function of the foot. In Gene's 60 years of farriery he has had thousands of horses left barefoot very successfully, where the foot and the horse were better because of it. He has also had thousands of horses that were shod with a variety of applications that were also better because of it. There are benefits of both depending on the horse, their use, their genetics, their lifestyle, their environment and several other factors. Every horse and every foot needs to be treated as an individual and to expect that each one can or should require the exact same hoof care approach is very unrealistic. There are a lot of horses that need certain mechanics for the foot to be sound and healthy that are just not possible without shoes. Their discipline, the terrain they work on, the internal component health, etc. all play a factor. Being a good steward for the horse has to be about their comfort and soundness and not some pre-determined protocol that I am committed to whether the horse is happy or not. Choices about what a horse needs and what a horse can or cannot due is individual. When you've worked on as many thousands and thousands of horses as Gene has, you gain an appreciate for what is best for each foot at that given time and you do your best to listen to the horse. Gene is a barefoot trimmer and he is a horseshoer. It is the horses that benefit because he has not limited his ability to listen to what they need by limiting his toolbox. Hope that makes best sense now.
