He got real quiet as the game went on and then that last second dunk by Lorenzo Charles shut his trap for good! lol...

Still the biggest upset in men's NCAA basketball history. Someone I knew back then who handled a book said the mere 7.5 point spread to Houston's favor was manufactured because a true spread of closer to 12 or 14 would have had too much money being placed on NC State. They had to do something to balance out the wagering. But, I will agree with many who have said a shot clock back then would have worked heavily to the advantage of Houston. But, then again, you didn't have the 3 point shot which appears would have favored NC State, especially late in the second half. Just a great game!

@bradlewis65143 жыл бұрын
@@michaelsaya4989 not rigged whatsoever! That's a ridiculous assessment! Especially in Syracuse's '87 instance! One, it was Syracuse's own fault they let time run after Smart's shot and two had they done better from the line throughout the game, Smart never would have had his opportunity! Rigged - PLEASE! I was pulling for the Orange that night (my freshman year in HS), but they were their own worst enemy! The charity stripe did them in just as it did Houston in '83! Valvano was a master planner - he knew Houston was the worst FT shooting team in the tournament field and once Houston slowed the tempo to gather themselves they played right into State's and Jimmy V's hands - Phi Slama Jama ended up missing their last six FT's down the stretch and it cost them more dearly than when they stopped running midway thru the second half
