I am really lucky as I live in London England and I look after urban foxes and feral cats (we have a scheme here for catching, a vet neuters and we let the cats recuperate in our home or bath room if it's totally undomesticated) then depending on the willingness of the cat to be rehomed we will try to rehome as many as we can and release at the capture point the ones that are too wild to home). Foxes and cats are great buddies sharing a symbiotic relationship where domestic or feral cats will show foxes which houses give out food and the foxes (who are seldom heavier but are taller than cats) act as albeit illusory bodyguards, akways deferring to the cats (cats always eat first!) the foxes also share their earths with feral cats. They do stay out all night but territory is strongly contested in London as there are at least 38,000 urban foxes in London, I think the earths are used more here. Foxes and badgers share sometimes but as foxes only tidy out twice weekly to the badgers O.C.D. up to 3 times daily, it seldom lasts long unlike the cat and fox partnerships. I didn't know that coyotes would take foxes but I would still love to meet one as coyotes fascinate me..I know foxes mate for life and by the end of the summer, the kitts, born early in the year (Feb.-March) are being urged to disperse and find their own territory by Mum and Dad who want some 'me' time brfore the cycle begins again in Jan-Feb. This is the point where we get casualties as the kitts get hit by cars or are simply unable to compete or the only earth available is infected with sarcoptic mange. All this is why we look after them, monitoring their condition trating
@lass-inangeles75649 жыл бұрын
+Anne Anderson (Foxiepaws) What wonderful work you do, hurrah for your group!!! Is there no way to get rid of the nasty sarcoptic mange mites - some spraying annually in areas? What a pest that is! I raised a Bengal Kit Fox once as a teenager. My home in India was full of rescued animals, foxes, eagles, dozens of cats, German Shepherd dog, mongooses, chickens, ducks, snakes, etc. Not all at once, but in stages, wild and domestic animal rescues took place. There were no vets in India, and I was it. So local pharmacy and doctor were besieged by me to treat animals and I did a lot of bone setting in birds (100% recovery rate), proper nutrition in animals, bathing and removing parasites inside and outside, and rehab slowly till animal was healed and able to manage on its own. Some stayed on, some flew off. Some were donated to people with gardens so they could live out lives in peace and be fed regularly. My fox always played with the GSD dog and cats and was so sweet! Felix was his name.

I live in Chicago and see raccoons, rabbits, opossum, deer, foxes, there was a mountain lion shot in the city a few years ago and a coyote wondered into a convenient store downtown and laid in a cooler, it was a hot day. I am also waiting for the foxes to come back! We have lived in our house for 2 years and neighbors tell us that each Spring the foxes are born under our deck. We were out of town that first Spring, but were able to witness this last Spring! I have a pretty awesome video myself! 6 kits! So, after seeing your video I went out and bought two cameras and have them set up. So far, just a raccoon, bunny and possum who like to take selfless! I'm thinking the kits will be born in March since they first came out last April 12th. It's so exciting! I hope you make another video this Spring if your den is occupied again!
@akiokami93677 жыл бұрын
I mean, it is sad that the coyote eats kits, but it is a part of nature. You need balance. Too many coyotes can become a nuisance, too many foxes can also become a nuisance. But you need both to control rodent populations. Foxes and coyotes both only have maybe 5 pups/kits pet season. While mice, rabbits, and squirrels produce more even multiple times in a season. No one is the bad guy in this story, it’s just how the world must operate

a few weeks ago a fox got in my back garden and was actually a vixen and pregnant. She had 4 cubs and the father would come and go. After a couple of days a coyote broke in and attacked the male fox I wanted to help but I was 2 scared :(. so the dad got injured but killed the coyote after 10 mins of fighting I had to remove the coyote out of my garden and put it in the forest close to my home and the adult foxes were staring at me. I called the vets because of the fathers wound. Once I found half a deer I dont know if it was all ready dead or the foxes got the deer. I still can see them from my kitchen window.

It is very common for wild predatory animals living near people to watch what people are about. It is not safe for wild animals to be watched and followed by people, because people expose them to predators. This is exactly what has happened with this fox den: the young curios people exposed them to a coyote. If you care about nature leave it alone.

In California we have native gray foxes, kit foxes, Sierra Nevada Red Foxes, but the run of the mill red fox is considered an introduced pest. Does NC have a native fox? Is the coyote native to the area?
@blobbertmcblob48888 жыл бұрын
Well hate do burst your bubble. Red foxes were not introduced to California, they've always naturally occurred there. Red foxes are the widest ranging of any fox species and can be found as far north as Canada, as far North East as Maine and as far south-west as Mexico.

Awesome video. However, by vilifying the coyote (e.g. the ominous music when the coyote enters) it supports people's irrational hatred of coyotes. Why are coyotes always portrayed as villains? It is similar to the narrative that lead to the destruction wolf populations.
@KFrost-fx7dt8 жыл бұрын
It's because they eat our pets and livestock and have killed humans on a few rare occasions. I wouldn't worry about them being destroyed though. Coyotes can flourish absolutely anywhere, unlike wolves. They will probably outlive humans as a species.

The coyote is not a good dog.When my Mom was fighting cancer, I saw a coyote sitting in someones driveway staring at me as I drove by.Traditional Indians think of coyotes as tricksters and bad messengers or a bad sign. I called my brother and sister in east Texas to warn them about the coyote. My brother said it was probably nothing. Later that night my Mom had a bad stroke. We drove down there to be with Mom. Dad and I came back to the house and and Dad said; I saw the damndest thing this morning. There was a coyote settin in the back yard lookin at the house.My Dad was a white man so I said I would'nt say anything to Mom about the coyote. you know how they are about that kind of stuff.I never told Dad about the other coyote . Mom died a little over a week later.

Good story about foxes, except for the melodrama. Really, if it's supposed to be about natural *sciences* it needs a scientifically-oriented screenplay and soundtrack. Dr. Schuttler got it right when she said "It's really hard for me to know who to side for." The screenwriter and soundtrack composer, on the other hand, are so guilty of melodrama.

+North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences I should have said, "likely". The pups were beginning to explore apparently and I suspect the Coyote got them outside of camera range. They looked too young to fend for themselves. Also, the parents coming back without them, is a bad sign. Admittedly, this is just speculation.

+Sickof Idiots Foxes tend to switch dens a lot, bringing the kits with them; especially if they feel the current den is threatened. This tends to frustrate wildlife watchers a lot as the fox parents tend to be paranoid and will make sure that their new den is even harder to find, meaning that the kits are never seen again in most cases.
