My first job was as an NCR technician and I worked on the models 86, 21, 51 ( and a couple of the brass models also ) and the accounting model 33 which I did training for in Jamaica back in 75/76. I can remember the nightmare it was but we had lots of fun!

OMG, what a fascinating look inside that thing of beauty and a joy for ever! A ridiculously sturdy and heavyweight build, with insane mechanical complexity almost reminding me of IBM Selectric typewriters or Monotype typecasting equipment (I still haven't seen the insides of a Curta, haha).

I always had the feeling that the intercom wasn’t just for show. Love the appearance of your father, looks like he has a great sense of humor.

Thanks for your video. I too have made some keys for my various NCR machines. Very rewarding as you showed. My 6000 also totals to zero. Wish I could fix that! It's nice to see someone else restoring these old machines. Best Regards, John

Thanks for a really interesting video! It's nice to see that this one has so much common with my Sweda 46. The button sections are easier to remove from the Sweda, because they are not bent. But the idea is exactly the same. And i do not need to remove the box for any operations. My Sweda also weighs about 40 kg, so i have the same issue, that i cannot lift it anywhere myself without perhaps ending in a hospital. And yep, i also have dropped screws in this thing. It seems that these cash registers all have some part which is a nightmare to work with. In the Sweda it was the relay of the motor's switch. I had to remove it and putting it back was a real nightmare. First i even managed to get the motor to run when it should not run - due to not putting a part in the correct position. Thank God, i didn't have to remove the whole relay to do that.

these locks had 2 keys 1 to turn the lock clockwise the second one turned counterclockwise. In other words a read key and a reset key.

Nice machine. Well done with the perseverance! I always wanted a Class 52 or 51. Finished restoring a Class 24 from about the same era as your machine, a few months ago, and THAT was a pain in many ways. Completely seized etc etc. Then I bought and have restored a National 422 - crank only, press button, from 1912. funny how they grow on you. And then the hernia... LOL!

Wish I had your confidence. Got a Sweda 45 cash register to unjam as well as two defective bus ticket machines requiring a service!

There would generally be no need to reset the clerk key with each transaction, particularly when only one cashier was on duty at a time. Having to press it with each transaction would be a nuisance, so it was typical for a machine to be configured to keep the selected clerk key depressed until reset or changed by the cashier. ( In your Part 1 video, I also commented that your machine was likely converted from a tan and brown grocery totaling cash register, to a single-entry bar cash register with a shiny chrome case. )

There was a standard read and reset key. There were also specifically made locks...I'll see if I can find an original reset key.

try getting a master key it is I think e46, also always use a magntised screw driver. Pay attention to the service position when you remove the control bank. remember to have a set of timming rods be carefull when cleaning the display the paint can come off. P.S at 1 quarter turn of the handle and your indacators and type wheels are free

I would absolutely love to hear about a service position for removing and reinstalling the control bank because that was *NOT* fun to work on*

The "columns" are called "banks or key banks".

Enjoyed your videos on your NCR. I have wanted one since I was a little girl. FINALLY a proud owner of one. Very similar to yours. A few different buttons and mine is not the shiny chrome shell. Could you tell me about the crank? I have looked online for M52 and I get nothing. Any ideas. I would like to share some pictures of mine if you have a public email address? Thanks for your time and helpful info. 😊

Hey Carolyn. Drop me an email from the address on the channel's "About" page and I can help you with those hand crank photos. It's a custom made ordeal that isn't really easy to explain in text how its made.

I just picked up a Class 52 register that was used in a pharmacy for 45+ years. The release mechanism for the double drawers appears to be controlled by an electric relay. There’s a multi-pin connector in the back of the machine where the drawer release bar is normally located. The machine also has two rows of mini transaction counters. The machine is all gummed up with old grease. I am in the process of dismantling the key columns in order to clean and free up the machine. Do you have an email address that I could contact you to discuss the machine? I would appreciate some guidance. Thanks.

Should be on my channel's main page still. click on the "and 1 more link" button near the top of the page and you should get a window where you can find my contact email.

One big question: How do you remove the indicator dial bar? Are they easy enough to reinstall?
@CelGenStudios
@CelGenStudios 10 ай бұрын
The large digit reel at the top? A fairly substantial disassembly of the mechanism and having to note where everything was aligned for reassembly. @@jojoglemond

Last time you showed that this machine had memory of entered digits. How is that stored ?
@CelGenStudios
@CelGenStudios 2 жыл бұрын
Mechanically. There's a set of mechanical counters buried deep inside the machine. There isn't an easy to take them out and show them without messing with a number of very fragile adjustments.

@@CelGenStudios Ok :--) It seems like would be a humongous effort to take one of these machines apart and together again and have it still working

very nice vid again. I have a detailed vid I just made on how them key banks go in when you actually see the trick you will probally need another 45 mins to yell and scream because its so freaking simple, but if you dont know like i didnt its a nightmare. the dept bank i have no idea i just get in by accident. If you have any vid of you putting that in i would love to see it . The old ncr guys simply refuse to help anyone period I find it hard to believe its because they hated them so much they never want to see them again. My opinion is they have some mind set that only ncr tech should know this stuff. I have the full service manuals I will be happy to help anyone its 6 inch thick but sectioned off and very hard to understand. I know with others it can be understood.. I also work on the sweda 46 piece of cake compared to ncr. i have a good idea how to fix your not total issues. im having issue with one now and i only have 2 that work. after the cycle the gear clicks for like 2 seconds and it should not do that i think its something with the clutch maybe a spring is missing i been on it a while now. and my dept bank the total and sub total is sticking so it has to come out but i dont want to because i dont think i can ever get it back in because the trick on the others dont work for it. maybe someone can watch mine and figure it out .

45 minutes of you swearing like a sailor at it? My dad taught me that you have to swear at things to make them do what you want them to. You should have heard us when we installed a new tap on the bathroom sink.
