he worked so hard from start to beginning, taking every criticism and insult with a bow and a smile and in the end went away with lots and lots of knowledge more. i'm just sad his last performance was so underscored. he could've chosen any topic, but instead of going for a diss or anything similar he went for a song he thought people in his age would relate to and would appreciate and got 184/300 for it. he had so little time to prepare and write with on going promotions, yet he went to the final. i'm just super proud of him, tho i would've wished for a higher score

I'm glad he's improved so much since this. While watching the first few performances, I was seriously worried he would develop bad habits, esp with his inability to really find the beat and flow. His delivery was seriously flawed in the beginning, and I understand that with SM not having much experience really nurturing rappers this is probably something that Mark had to reconcile and overcome on his own; I seriously applaud him for that. I can definitely see the beginnings of his particular cadence here, and i'm glad he's improved on that. While I think he's a consistent rapper and has many good standout moments (his tempo switch up in Cherry Bomb is still one of the highlights of his rap ability within NCT), I do think TY is the more emotive and charismatic rapper, and he consistently delivers. And whereas I think Mark has a, as I mentioned before, very particular cadence and flow when he raps, I wish he would display more variety. The best (or most expressive) rappers not only have their own sound, but also can adapt to many sounds (think Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, 21 Savage, even Suga of BTS and Jooheon of MX) and EMOTE when they rap. This is something that Mark can improve on now, and one of the main reasons I think TY beats him out as SM's best rapper.
@alixa36764 жыл бұрын
Mark is good. Actually, talent and skill wise, I think he is better with TY. But I agree with you when you said he can grow on his "variety". This is also the reason why TY may seem a better rapper. I wish SM can help Mark grow on this. I noticed this a lot when NCT Dream had their comeback without Mark. The whole sound of the unit changed and it made them distinct. Or maybe I was too used with Mark's voice and technique? But anywho, I agree with you. And yes, Jooheon is really one of the best and sadly underrated idol rappers T_T
@registeredjopper4 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth I think this is somewhere we’d have to agree to disagree. Mark is, unfortunately, not a versatile rapper, and IMO that is something that hinders his progress. Having a “signature” flow or sound is great until it stifles your growth. It’s great that I can recognize Mark on most tracks (and he tends to have the most popular verse bc it’s very easy to recognize, easy to replicate, and easy on the ears) but also he’s not capable of diversifying his musical portfolio. Rappers like Suga, Yuto and Mingi have a word or phrase they say prior to rapping so that even when they sound different, they’re recognizable to listeners (“Suga”, “Yutoda”, “Fix on!”). TY is better, IMO, because he can rap on just about any beat, he can switch up his flow quickly and easily on any beat, he is capable of rapping in a way that is conventionally appealing (his T7S, No Manners, Kick It, City Lights verses) as well as being very experimental and playing around with his flow, rhythm and rhyme scheme (Around, Be Natural, Jopping, GTA). Meanwhile, Mark’s solo Talk About didn’t sound all that different flow and rhythm-wise from Bad Smell, Kick It, etc. He played around a bit more with QTAH, it would be good if he developed that skill.
@registeredjopper4 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth As I said in my last sentence, QTAH shows to me that he’s certainly working on it. I hope he does improve. I don’t understand what you mean by saying all the things you’re versatile in may not be good... it’s no question that versatility in your musical/artistic skills will only benefit you. And I think it’s fine for TY to not only or always do the recognizable thing; clearly it benefits Mark and TY is able to constantly improve his skills as a rapper. Rappers like J.Cole, Chance, Childish Gambino, etc,, they’re not SC rappers that rap on the same recognizable beat in every track; that’s part of why they’re considered so great.
@registeredjopper4 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Ah well~ we can agree to disagree on TY 😅

MATTHEW 12:36-37 "But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned."
