I don't know but I already saw them moving so much in other performances,by seeing them just standing there and killing it by just... standing, it's like a breath of fresh air to me. Yes they singing them live XD Funny you mention Boyz II Men, because they love the group so much they called themselves Boyz 9 Men lol. Please check 'Dreams Come True' and 'Love Song' for 90 vibes feels. Edit - oh and 'Magic Carpet Ride' too, oh man they have so many classic R&B songs in their b-sides.

I know I am looking at this reaction 9 months after the fact, but I want to say thank you for reacting to their video. The NCT franchise is incredible. You have to look at more videos of them to get the real essence of them. I recommend the show called Killing Voice with NCT 127. It is an outstanding display of their talent and discography. The first 3 singers, including the guy with the hat, that you heard in this video is a part of that group. NCT 127 is another unit of the NCT franchise. Doyoung 4:12 and Taeil (beret) did that. I get what you're saying. They have other upbeat tracks. From what I'm hearing you need to listen to EXO their older brothers, 90's sound. You want New Edition, watch to EXO - 'Call Me Baby' produced by Teddy Riley. You want harmonization Boyz II Men, watch to EXO - 'Tempo'. If anything can be said about kpop companies is that they train their artists, they are essentially performers, the main objective of a kpop group is to make the public sing and dance, obviously like any pop group, but the image and the performance on stage is the most important thing, so I think you should see more performances to understand how a kpop group works. I’m sure you’ll find incredible performances not only from NCT, personally my favorites, but from others like Shinee, Seventeen, EXO, and for older groups TVXQ and INFINITE also incredible singers

yeah I’ve actually noticed a lot of Korean ballad singers don’t move too much. Probably be they don’t pay much attention to the physical theatrics (cause let’s be honest a lot of people do it) so you focus more on the voice + lyrics) the most I’ve seen then do is the lean forward/back Taeil did lol and again that’s just for ballads

a lot of people have already said but i think the not moving rlly is just a staple with kpop groups during ballads - if they do move, it’s usually just to do a little scenic walk to another part of the stage before continuing. i never rlly noticed it before you pointed it out bcs it’s just such a usual thing, they’re usually standing in specific lines/formations or sitting on chairs. i think it’s probably meant to serve as a contrast, when they perform their upbeat songs they’re always either dancing or jumping and running around on stage, but most ballads try to convey somberness and sadness so the not moving around serves as a visual contrast for the audience as well. that said, i really couldn’t tell you if this is live or not. they do sound that great live, but kpop has gotten sneakier and sneakier with passing of pre-recorded vocals or entirely mr as live versions. if you do want to hear them live, best chances are their concert videos such as “back 2 u” and “no longer” or their recording diaries/uncut videos where you can see the recording process. this song, “from home”, has one, as do many others such as “magic carpet ride” or “faded in my last song”. if you’re interested in certain members, most vocal line members have at least one cover up on their youtube channel, most especially doyoung and taeil (beret and black hair hitting the long notes in this video) thank you for the reaction and i hope you’ll continue to check out nct!!

The Kpop industry is saturated with tenors and it’s definitely what appeals most to their target demographic. NCT is quite experimental and varied in their sound but the structure of each unit is usually 2-3 main vocalists, 2-3 main rappers, maybe one or two lead vocals and a couple of main dancers who don’t necessarily specialize in vocal performance so it’ll be tough to find more than a 3 or 4-part harmony in any of their songs. And like I said, it’s an industry of tenors so the harmonies won’t be as rich as they could be otherwise. They really do sing very calmly live. I think there’s a cultural element to it but they don’t have as much of a flair for the dramatics. A great and emotional live performance from NCT 127 is “No Longer”. And a track that features harmonies in the chorus that I particularly enjoy is “Love Song”

Most Asians (men and women) have low voices, but because of stereotypes in their culture, they are retrained to sing tenor or soprano parts. Not only in Korea. Polyphony does not sound without low voices. Low voices are a dense background on which high voices begin to shine. And yes, I never understood this passion for "angel voices". Low voices are beautiful. They have saturation, volume and depth. This man express my pain. Most NCT members can sing. Yes, tenors have been recruited for the positions of the main and lead vocalists, but in fact they do not sound so similar because of different techniques they use. In some k-pop bands vocalists really sound like clones. Jaehyun, Taeyong, Mark, Jaemin and Jisung are baritones (yes, this is determined not only by notes, but also by color of voice and speech register), but they are not allowed to manifest themselves in this role outside of rap lines because its "industry of tenors". I love their music so much but this thing is just killing me. It's so stupid and wasteful. P.S.: Sorry for my english.

This was pre recorded if I am not wrong, I get the point of moving and mimics but in South Korea that's actually not a thing not even with Soloist artist, the one that do that are korean born in US or even Canada because they have references from US artist, also all this stuff are choreograph and since after this song they were doing more almost a set of 20 minutes I guess they didnt want to over do it. That been said it doesnt mean they lack emotion or stage presence is just that ballads in south korea are mostly like that, but NCT can do the american style too there are a lot of cover videos and in their concerts they nailed it. this is kind of a standard way to perform a kpop ballad tbh. even if this was pre-recorded they definitely sing exactly like this live just standing there too since there's tons of other performances including the practice in the dance studio where all they did was stand in front of the mirrors and sing jhdsgskdg. never really noticed the issue with it cos most ballad performances are like this.

K-pop in general do not sing in that style unless it’s a concert then you will get a more free style but they generally stay with the original flow. And as far as a baritone you gotta realize that is not the focal point even though Johnny has a deep tone and other members as well that’s not the focus. I would recommend any SHINee live vocals and you’ll get the color that you’re looking for or any EXO live vocal thank me later. Two of the best 2nd and 3rd Gen groups PERIODT. i really dont know about the moving thing but i've been watching a lot of kpop live performances and most of the time when it comes to ballads they dont really move but some do moves it depends tbh. As for "live performance" the thing that i noticed with kpop is that in music shows (not award shows) most of the time during their first week of performance they would either use pre-recorded MR(?) so the idols could focus more on the dancing then the nest week of promotion they would sing live however some idols do sing live even in their first week of promotion, some dont sing live (most of the time using prerecording or even amping up the backtracks). This all depends on the company. im not gonna lie, when i first started listening to kpop (10 years ago) i was disappointed when i realized that a lot of them use prerecording (but i know that they can sing and dance at the same time and you just need to find the right live performance video) but from what i know all of this is decided by the company/agency and they are mostly strict so sometimes the idols don't have a choice. NCT is one of the best entertainers, idols, singers, dancers, rapper group out there they can sing and they are stable singing live when performing but the agency sometimes gives them prerecording (like many groups in this industry) to focus on dancing and entertaining the fans. I do agree it is frustrating and im sure the idols are because most of them chose this career to perform to sing, i feel like the company should give them more opportunities to sing live.

My guess for the lack of movement and expression is that there was a very touching video being played while they sang, showing their journey to get where they are, so the video was the main focus and they were singing alongside of it and were not the main focus on this one

Thanks for checking out this performance. It's one of my favorites from them. While most of the time they pre-record their vocals, it's mainly for the performances where they're dancing and need backing vocals. The ballads tend to not be pre-recorded (yes, there are members of this group whose voices have cracked while singing live ballads). I believe they are singing live in this performance as well. It looks effortless because they are well-trained to sing and dance at the same time without sounding like you're dancing and singing at the same time. There's a video of the guy in the beret (Taeil) singing and playing the piano at the same time and you can see how easy it is for him to hit those notes. He's covering a song called "Baby Baby" by 4Men: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXSkeouviLSqatk I get why you would like to see them move a little more. If you look at the big-picture, I think this was more of an artistic choice by the stage director so that the audience can focus on the set (video in the background telling a story of the members) rather than focusing on movements. This was an awards show that traditionally has an audience so perhaps the lack of movement was intentional. Also, I haven't seen ballads with dancing in Kpop. Most of the time they're sitting down or standing in one spot.

i have never really seen any kpop artist move or 'act out the song' when they are singing ballads in a performance setting. it's just not a thing that they do. so sorry to say but you probably are the only one feeling that LOL. and clearly this is not a video but a performance -- they're at an award show lmao. and LMAO of course they can sing like this live. they release studio recording videos, with them clearly singing. these videos are on youtube, available to anyone to watch if they just look for it. i would suggest trying that next time so you don't have to question their abilities.
