Yestoday is a track about leaving behind your mistakes or regrets and moving onto to who you are presently. Hence, the song is not called “Yesterday” but is called “YesTODAY” ! Each member sings about a different situation, but it’s Taeyong (1st rapper) and Mark (2nd rapper) who really get deep with their lyrics and use real life examples in their parts. This song has really deep meaning for them, esp. Taeyong. There were rumors abt him during his debut time, which were later proven false. He was under pressure bcs he's afraid that his rumors could affect NCT's debut. On the other hand, the company demanded him to set a good example for his members. For the other members, the highest score during evaluation week is 100, but Taeyong had to reach 102.

I'm copy pasting this comment again : Taeyong is the one who started the song. He's the leader and center for NCT 127 as well as NCT as a whole. He was in Make a wish , Kick it, Superhuman, Boss, Regular, Misfit, The 7th sense and of course, Black on black and Resonance out of all the ones you've watched. He's the main rapper, main dancer, leader, center, sub vocalist, face of the group and visual. He's also a lyricist, composer, choreographer as well as producer. He's permanently in NCT 127 and usually participates for NCT U too as it's a rotational unit. Apart from NCT, he's also in a super group formed by their company with their idols from their senior groups as well. He's known for his unrivalled charisma and stage presence and is called "the absolute ace" and "the sole center". NCT concept starts from him. He's the centre of the NCT circle that keeps evolving bigger so basically it revolves around him.

"Yestoday" (Yes-to-day) is one of those songs that you just have to look up the lyrics to. The words are very personal to Taeyong and Mark and it's all about their shortcomings, regrets and struggles and how they sacrificed their youth to become Idols and to do what they love to do. An explanation of what it's about, doesn't do it justice. The song is off NCT's Empathy album so SM kind of reworked Taeyong's original song to make it fit more of an empathetic vibe and message. The main message is still very powerful, but far less dark and self deprecating than Taeyong originally wrote the song and lyrics to be. From the very beginning Taeyong's plan was to have Doyoung be the vocalist on the song, but when SM greenlighted it for the album they decided to add Mark and Lucas to it as well. I always find it slightly odd that Lucas was the one that was given the all English verse, because he isn't extremely fluent in English normally. Lucas is Chinese and he is a member of WayV so his native language is Cantonese and Mandarin. However, he did a really good job with his pronunciation, so he must have practiced it quite a bit. It seems like Mark would be a more logical person to have an all English verse because he is Korean-Canadian and English is his native language, but I guess Mark actually wrote his lyrics, so the choice to use mostly Korean, must have been what he wanted.

the first one is Taeyong! hes the overall leader of NCT itself. Taeyong got the longest verse because this song is pretty much his and Doyoung’s (the one singing the chorus). The symbolism behind the animals that show up in this MV is amazing. NCT has a a really strong dream concept (watch NCTmentary, you'll get what I mean) and the first animal was a cluster of parrots that actually represents grapevine, meaning a person-to-person method of spreading rumours and gossip. And the fact that it showed up during Taeyong's part is more mindblowing because right before NCT's official debut, rumours spread about him being a scammer and a bully (it was refuted later, but he still apologized, you can see it on NCT Life) and it really took a toll on him mentally and caused him to be more reserved even though he had a bright personality. Then the goldfish is a more positive symbol; it's a prediction of future success and happy adventures. And there's also mentions of spiritual healing. The third one to show up is the gecko, it represents anxiety or fear that won't go away but reluctant to share about it to others. And the fear of judgement from ignorant people that keeps getting in the way of your goal. Tbis is important for Mark because he was really young when he moved from Canada to Korea and joined SM and he was basically alone. But the gecko itself, (meaning not an interpretation of a dream) represents regeneration. As in renewal, rebirth and a fresh start. During Lucas' part there was no physical animal but there's a butterfly being projected in the background, butterfly represents change because the animal transforms from a somewhat lowly caterpillar. Meaning they might be seeing themselves in some sort of changing phase. For the ending, it was a koi fish. It is symbolic of patience, perseverance, determination, ambition, tenacity, courage and success. So in a dream the fish is a reminder that you can and will overcome life’s obstacles and adversities.

This song deserves more love. Thanks! I would love for you to react to Taeyong's solo MV called "Long Flight." Although Taeyong and Mark both write a lot of their own lyrics, out of all NCT members, Taeyong is the only one to write, compose, and produce some of his own music. He has leaked some parts of his music for years, but his fans have yet to get a solo album. He's is a real artist, so hopefully, that day will come soon.

For this song, you guys definitely need to read the lyrics, since the lyrics are personal to them, Taeyong basically wrote most of the song and Mark wrote his verse. YESTODAY is a word play between Yesterday and Today, since the lyrics itself talk about their past and present. Like I said, you need to read the lyrics to understand it better. This is one of my favorite ones from them, this song is a real jewel and it deserves all the love it can get. This is a personal song for Taeyong (first rapper, also, the group leader). It's about his struggles of being ashamed of some false accusations which were tossed at him prior to his debut, but, also, finding strength. He mostly found it in Doyoung (the vocalist here). TY worked on this song for four years, as someone's mentioned, and he really wanted to fit Doyoung into it. He'd later polished it for a mainstream release by adding parts for the other rappers, Mark Lee (Canadian rapper, 2nd guy) and Lucas (who's now in NCT's Chinese subunit, WayV, but, at this point he was only in NCT U, while the rest were in NCT 127).

I’ll copy paste my explanation about this song again here : The man who started the song with long rap verse was Taeyong, the original author of this song, the leader of NCT. This is one of the most emotional song from NCT (lyrics wise), and it’s not even a ballad song. It’s a rap song with smooth buttery chorus by Doyoung. And this song was written by Taeyong originally in his trainee era and has so much meaning to him. About his past and all (not a romantic kind of song). He wrote it specifically to suit Doyoung’s voice in the chorus, because these 2 are bestie from the start, they have sweetest friendship, and its well known within the fandom. A song about hardships he had because of burdening past, people keep telling him to grow up and accuse him (because of misleading information), but he had to be strong and move on as a leader of NCT. Live for today and tomorrow, leave yesterday. That’s why it’s “Yestoday”. In 2018 SM decided to release this song in NCT2018’s Empathy album, and they added MARK and LUCAS to the lineup. MARK also wrote his own verse; he said it’s like a mini autobiography of him. He even mentioned “156 Bus”, a real bus he probably used to take everyday in Canada, he left the country to reach his dream and he said that “rap is my new 156”. At the end of his rap he said “hope you like it where i am now”, he talked to himself in the past. So after react to the MV please also react to the lyrics (make sure it’s the extended version, because they have the shorter version too). In NCT2020 Resonance album, SM once again release Taeyong’s song in trainee era, entitled “Light Bulb”, it was originally performed by Taeyong and Doyoung back than with title “Switch Off”. This song also very meaningful to them! ^^
