Taeyong is so impressive and inspiring. Everyday I'm amazed by him. He did not have a background in music at all before joining SM at 18. He was not exposed to any music-related training at all before that. Exposure to anything during earlier age help a lot with one's skillset and ability to learn new things on top of a basic foundation. For someone with zero music / rap / dance / entertainment until 18, it is beyond impressive how far he has gone. He went from a "blank page" (a SM trainer called him this) to someone who not only excels during his parts but also guides and trains others.

This seems to align with when he was recruited to SM at 18. If he transferred to SOPA after he was recruited by SM (which makes sense) he truly had no music exposure before that. On an episode of Happy Together (a variety show) Taeyong mentioned that when he was recruited by SM he had no idea that SM is a big entertainment company (along with YG and JYP). He thought the Big 3 entertainment companies are SBS, KBS and MBC which are major TV channels in South Korea. I am not familiar with the singing competitions; I'm curious do you have links? I believe Taeyong does not have a brother but he has an older sister.
