Can you make another video comparing these two KINDS of filters again. I purchased the quartz 8PL and 64PL on black Friday last year.. and i wanted to see if i should stick with what I got . I do vids and take pics. I think i would have purchased the Variable ND first, but I think I like the feature of having the polarizer added. I think an in-depth vid would help.. thanks.. I dont want to turn into a gear head.

Up until watching this video, I had no idea what ND filters were - a lot of references to such in comments section of several videos, without any context. Now, I understand quite a lot about them, enough to shop for and put to practical use anyways. Thanks. That's what I really like about this video - concision and precision. Have a blessed day.

I remember in the day buying a Cheap VND filter and as I would turn it at certain stops, it would cast a horrible vignette or "X" across the entire video (Not very smooth looking and I wasted $89) So I quickly learned that you "Get what you pay for" Putting Premium filters in front of my expensive glass just makes sense and now that I bought premium filters my photos and videos look awesome So my advice to anyone who thinks that there's no difference between a $89 VND and a $289 VND.................Think again I currently own a complete set of NISI 4x4 V5 pro Filter system ($800 worth) and they just work...........again you get what you pay for ;-) Thanks, Dunna for this great explanation on VND's........and Thanks to Petter McKinnon for helping make awesome products for us to use I really hate to see people waste money on cheap junk when for a couple hundred more they could have the best quartz Glass on the market Best regards, Rick
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 5 жыл бұрын
Great advice Rick! I experienced the same thing... and even the $200 filter that I showed in the video gives me the X at the darkest point, which means I can really only use 70% of its function. And I was excited about that one because it even had the hard stops that I assumed would stop me from getting that far.

One thing to add, that I learned today, is step up rings (yes I am a Photography newb). These allow you buy one large size ND filter and buy the much cheaper step up rings to fit all your lenses. This would be one thing I would add to this video. Great stuff, I learned so much from this and your exposure triangle video! Thanks again for your hard work!

Lol even they know this is an amazing, well prepared, detailed video that provides a lot of information, comparison and knowledge. They are just upset that 1 it's a pricy ND and 2 you got it for free. People needs to realize how much work you have put in to get here. A success is rewarded in public for a hard work which one puts in private. As always great video Dunna. Can't wait to get my 6-9 PMVNDF

Johnny 1. This wasn’t a product review and I never claimed it to be, so anyone’s thoughts on my bias of the product really have no relevance(I appreciate that you put “review” in quotations). It was a video where I explained the uses of ND filters and gave some tips for people who might not know about them. The paid sponsored part was that I used and explained some of the PolarPro filters’ features. I did mention that I like the product a lot... which I do, if you don’t think that pet was true, that’s ok... you’re allowed to think what you want. 2. That tweet about the google pixel was just a joke about how many posts I had seen, I thought the joke pet was pretty obvious when I said that they sent me a jar of pickles... which they obviously didn’t. I’m sorry you view all of this in such negative light. I do try to see the positive and constructive side of people’s feedback and criticism so I’ve taken some things from your comments for sure, but it does make me sad that you think that creators like me aren’t trying to benefit our audiences. Everything I do on my channel goes through a filter of “how is this beneficial for my viewers” Sometimes, me getting free things means I can do reviews that benefit viewers. Sometimes companies want to pay me to talk about their product, in which case I try to do an overview of the product and include information on how to best use it... still beneficial for my viewers. I’m well aware that I’m trying to get something out of all of this but it’s definitely not completely selfish... I like to believe other creators (the ones that I know) are the same. There is no conspiracy to trick the audience. We’re just trying to get ahead while also helping others get ahead. I do appreciate that you said this was one of the better videos you saw. But in the end, bias is everywhere... as humans we can’t stop it really. If someone smiles at me I might think they are a nice person, that’s me creating bias. The trick here is that, as consumers, we just need to keep that in mind when we research and factor what we think and believe is happening in front of us. If you think that a reviewer is lying based on being getting a product, then keep that in mind before you buy. This comment is way too long and I’m babbling. I should just make a video. Thanks for taking the time to chime in. I appreciate it.
@dunnadidit

Ian - I’m glad you’re happy with the filters. My understanding is that Gerald said the B+W was potentially a bit better but that the value was better on the PMVND because of the features and extras. The tests looked like they were both great either way!

I highly recommend getting a single step up ring for each lens. Some sizes are harder to find than other. For example... I had a heck of a time finding a 52-77mm but they are out there. Is it because these filters do not have female thread to be stacked? Or does multiple stacking of PL cause bad results?

Hey man, awesome video! I now want to get the Mckinnon Filter and am having trouble deciding between the 67mm, 77mm, or 82mm. I have a 50mm 1.8 fe sony lens and 35mm fe 1.8 sony lens preordered. 67mm mckinnon filter is all i need due to compatibility, but wouldn't 82 be the better choice due to versatility with step up rings? Is there a negative to this?
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 5 жыл бұрын
82mm means you’ll always be able to use it with any lens you buy as long as you get a step up ring. I got 77 mm ones and I’m kicking myself now because there are a few 82mm lenses I want
@AnimeTube7Junior
@AnimeTube7Junior 5 жыл бұрын
Dunna Did It I see, thank you for your quick response. So I should definitely get an 82 for any future lens purchases I make, thank you for that. Also, when getting a step up ring, if I have a 49mm diameter lens and a 55mm diameter lens, should I get both a 49-82 and a 55-82 or do I only need a 49-82 which means everything in between 49 to 82? Sorry noob question

I dont get the weird focal length of the filters. What is an 82 mm? Is that for an 85 mm lens? Should you just buy whatever is closest in size?
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 жыл бұрын
There are two different things there... focal length (how we know how wide or telephoto a lens is) and the filter thread size. The filter thread size is the diameter of the front of the lens. So physically bigger lenses require physically bigger filters. The filter thread size is usually written somewhere on the lens

@dunnadidit 5 жыл бұрын
Okay here’s the thinking. With the 6-9 stop, if 6 stops is too dark, you can always bump up the iso a bit and you might get a bit more noise... OR... with the 2-5 stop, if it’s too bright, you can always stop down the aperture a bit but then you lose some shallow depth of field. Really you just have to decide which is most important to you.

Hey Dunna. Thank you for the explanation! Especially the counting stops trick is useful to know. However, I'm not quite sure how to apply it to my system and was wondering if you could expand a bit more. The reason being: my camera also has a 1/48 and 1/96 shutter speed option. Does the "3 moves = 1 stop" still apply to that?
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Actually that does break up the rule a bit when your camera has those video centric shutter speeds. Unfortunately you just have to keep those in mind and remember that 1 stop is a doubling of shutter speed and find the closest shutter speed to that. So if you’re trying to shoot at 1/48th, one stop above that is 1/96, one above that is 1/192 etc hope that helps
@dnnyktzn7247
@dnnyktzn7247 3 жыл бұрын
@@dunnadidit Thank you for your answer! So my system offers the option for the first 3 stops to have video centric shutter speeds: 48, 50, 60, 80, 96. Then 100, 120, 125, 160, (no 196), 200. Then 200, 240, 250, 320, 400 (although because the 196 is missing it “overlaps”) .. and from there it switches to 3 moves: 500, 640, 800.
 I’m a bit confused as to how this would affect the counting. I guess 48-96 is 1 stop. But is 96-200 then 2? And then until 400 again 3? Another question I have regarding this: what if the exposure would be correct at say a shutter speed of 1/80 or 1/125 instead of those full stops. How would that relate to the stops on the ND filter? And then last but not least: I would like to buy the PMVND as well but I’m doubting which one would be best for me as I don’t have money for both. I shoot mainly outside in bright daylight, and I saw another video showing the differences between the two with the lens wide open. In that one, it seemed obvious for me to go with the 6-9. However, I usually don’t shoot wide open and if I’m not mistaken the lenses also have better quality 1-2 stops down. So with that in mind, maybe the 2-5 would actually be fine.
What are your experiences on this, keeping this in mind and also the different shutter speeds I have, and which one would you recommend me to get?
Hoping you could help me a bit more. My apologies for all the questions .. I’m just getting started and trying to learn and understand the right methods.

Does your front element rotate? And if not, how to you ensure the same level of polarization applied between different lenses?
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 жыл бұрын
The front element rotates on the variable ND filters and the ND/PL filters.
@MrMilanina
@MrMilanina 4 жыл бұрын
Dunna Did It Right, I know that. I was asking about the lens, but wasn’t precise enough. In any case, when you screw in the filter, its position will also determine the level of polarization being removed. That means when you screw it on the lens 1 it might not be the same as on the lens 2 so one could have polarization removed more than the other. That’s why I prefer fixed NDs as they keep providing consistent results.
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 жыл бұрын
MrMilanina - a I gotcha. Yes fixed nd’s will be more consistent since you shouldn’t be getting any polarization. Higher quality variable nd’s are better but not perfect by any means.

@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 жыл бұрын
It’s by the same company, PolarPro. You can get it on their site (or at the link in the description). It’s not better necessarily, but it’s a solid ND (only one darkness, not variable) and it has polarization (good for cutting reflections) so while it’s a similar tool, it’s not the same as the PM ones.
