For anyone who is confused, this symphony is more commonly known in the English-speaking world as No.9 (D944), while No.8 is the Unfinished (B minor, D769) and No.7 is in E major (D729). Of course numbering of Schubert symphonies is always a moot point given the various unperformed and incomplete works and fragments he produced. Hence the need for Deutsch catalogue numbers! What is not in doubt is that the symphony is a masterpiece and that this is a masterful interpretation.

Erneut eine wunderbare Aufführung dieser Sinfonie durch das NDR Sinfonieorchester unter der Leitung von Günter Wand! - In meinem Reclam-Konzertführer fand ich gestern zu diesem Werk den Satz: "Insofern ist auch das bekannte Wort Robert Schumanns von den 'himmlischen Längen' (...) nur positiv gemeint: Es sind immer erfüllte Längen, weil sie so eminent logisch und auch konstruktiv ablaufen; allerdings setzen sie sowohl wache Zuhörer voraus wie aufmerksame Musiker , die sich im strukturellen Ablauf der Musik immer genau orientieren können und die Spannung zu halten vermögen." Günter Wand und die NDR Sinfoniker erweisen sich als die aufmerksamsten Musiker: Sie musizieren von der ersten bis zur letzten Sekunde unter Hochspannung und lassen bei mir als Zuhörer zu keiner Zeit den Gedanken an irgendwelche Längen aufkommen. Mit einer lebendigen Phrasierung, genauester Artikulation, rhythmischer Präzision und einer minutiös abgestuften Dynamik decken sie den ganzen Reichtum der Schubertschen Partitur auf, fördern wie selbstverständlich ihre Strukturen zutage, machen harmonische Wendungen hör- und erfahrbar oder horchen den diversen Eintrübungen und Gefährdungen dieser ansonsten eher vordergründig "fröhlich" daherkommenden Musik nach. So entsteht am Ende ein äußerst vielschichtiges Werk, eine Schlüssel-Sinfonie des 19. Jahrhunderts. Dagegen klingen viele andere der hier bei youtube ins Netz gestellten Aufführungen dieser Sinfonie eher wie ein platter, eindimensionaler, oberflächlicher "bunter Melodienreigen".

Majestätische und wunderschöne Aufführung dieser romantischen und literarisch großartigen Sinfonie mit gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Instrumente. Der zweite Satz klingt besonders schön und echt melodisch. Der erfahrene und unvergleichliche Dirigent leitet das damalige ausgezeichnete Orchester im gut betrachteten Tempo und mit perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Alles ist wunderbar!

Es ist auch meine Lieblingssinfonie von Schubert. Robert Schumann war auch begeistert, als er die Partitur im Nachlass fand. Er war bei Schuberts Bruder zu Besuch in Wien. Er veranlasste die erste Aufführung dieses musikalischen Meisterwerks durch Mendelssohn. Das war viele Jahre nach Schuberts Tod.

Honestly after listening dozens of recordings of this symphony in my library only Furtwangler and Solti could achieve the monumental precision and drama Gunter Wand reach with Das NDR Hamburg. One of greatest interpretations of my favorite symphony. 💐💐💐💐

For a long time I could not approach this symphony, it always felt like being overly big in construction, like a big mess of musical ideas. Tried different recordings from several famous conductors, it could not be helped, Schubert's "Great" ended up on my "I dont like" list. Years later I stumbled over Günther Wand's interpretation and for some reason I could not stop listen to it. Suddenly everything was in place, theme development and Schubert's keen construction across all movements started to shine. Something magical had happened, Maestro Wand finally had unlocked this master piece for me. Many thanks for sharing this great musicial gem.

I heard this symphony live with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin a few days ago and I don't recognise the work at the moment. The lightness and abysses Wand extracts from the work, the dynamics he develops, are really incredibly exciting, precise and emotionally gripping. Of course, the orchestra was still called something completely different in 1985, but in Hamburg, it seems to me, they're not very particular about naming things.

Wunderbare Aufführung! It is more correctly called the great C major Symphony (in contrast to No.6 the little C major symphony). "The Great" is a misnomer.

Ein ehemaliges Mitglied der Berliner Philharmoniker erzählte mir mal von einer Probe mit Günter Wand zur "Großen C-dur": "Die Probe dauerte 3 Stunden. Wirklich geprobt wurden höchstens 90 Minuten. Den Rest der Zeit erzählte Günter Wand Witze und Anekdoten aus seiner Laufbahn. Wir konnten am Schluss nicht mehr vor Lachen"😂😂

多くの此の曲の演奏を聴いてきた。大好きな曲なので。此の演奏は素晴らしい。ライヴ録音では此の演奏を超えるものを知らない。スタヂオ録音を含めると、Szell/cleveland のみが此れを超えるだろう。第２楽章の内声部の処理がポイントになる。それにしても、Wand/NDRの音は何と美しいことだろう。

I recommend listening to Wand's 1995 recording with the Berliner Philharmoniker. Same style but with slightly better orchestra and better accoustics. The sound is softer, rounder and more voluminous, not so harsh as in the overrated Elbphilharmonie (listen to the piercing harsh brass).

I you read carefully this concert was at the Berlin Philharmonie, not in Hamburg, for your knowledge many great musicians have complaints about Philharmonie, even Karajan complained many times about the acoustics @@@!!!

@@IvanHernandez-gx4rt The Berlin Philharmonie has almost the same structure like the Hamburg one (please compare photos of the inner architecture): A niche for the orchestra and plenty of levels that disrupt and even swallow the complexity of the sound. In short: catastrophic. In both halls plenty of people can/have to sit and 'enjoy" the music from behind of the orchestra, which is a perversion in my view. There is a reason that the shoebox structure is considered to be the best for accoustics. The Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein or the Boston Symphony Hall are considered to be the best by accustic lovers, not local patriots. There is a concert hall in Berlin that is well known for a very good sound, the Concert Haus with a classical shoe box design. But it seems to be swept under the carpet to not embarrass the younger and more hyped sister.

One doesn't include his 7th Symphony, since according to the current Schubert research it was put together by other people using Schubert's sketches. Which then makes the former 9th ("The Great") the 8th.

この演奏を「見て」ハッとなった ヴァントが本当に楽しそうな表情をしている瞬間がある ときにほとんどアイコンタクトだけで指揮しているのでは？とおもえる場面もある 1990年代に入りギュンター・ヴァントは日本で神格化されていったが それ以前はよくてB級指揮者のあつかいだったそうだ とにかくヴァントの演奏は自由度がなく息苦しい雰囲気があると言われていたのかな？ たぶん私は巨匠として神格化されるまえの「過激な」ヴァントのほうが好きかもしれない 「自由度がない」 たしかにそうかもしれない たとえばテンシュテットのようにオーケストラの自発性にまかせる部分はないかもしれない しかし、ヴァントの指揮する表情から「音楽の喜び」をしっかり感じることができた たとえばバッハは神の創り出した秩序を音楽で再現しようと試みた あの時代、音楽は数学と同じく学問であった…よね？(忘れた!) バッハは神の創り出した秩序の再現に喜びを見いだしていた…のではないか ヴァントも同じなんだろうね 作曲家の創り出した秩序(世界)を再現する喜びを感じながら指揮している ヴァントの表情からそれを感じる NDR交響楽団のメンバーもそれにこたえて素晴らしい演奏をしている たしかにテンシュテットのような「自由度」はないかもしれない でも、ここには間違いなく「音楽の喜び」が溢れている!!!!!! ヴァントの楽しそうな表情ときたら!!!! 演奏も素晴らしい!!!!! グッと絞ったオーケストラの響き!! 浮かび上がる様々なテクスチャーにハッとなる!! まさに私が好きなヴァントだ!!!!!!

No longer. As to what *used* to be called No.7: "Although the work (which comprises about 1350 bars) is structurally complete, Schubert only orchestrated the slow introduction and the first 110 bars of the first movement." Less than ten percent of it is the work of Schubert. That is why - several decades ago - it was dropped from the revised catalog of his works. His symphonies are now officially recognized as being eight in number. 🐧 Among others, Herbert Blomstedt and Marek Janowski accept and endorse the new numbering system. 🐧
