Popular Russian romance composed as far back as 1839. Text was changing over time and popularity fluctuated. Today many know it but few can sing the full text. But it's really beautiful when someone manages to remember all lines.

I wonder where the author of the composition for the song got the idea of how "few" Russians can sing it. The song is very well known by folk song singers and sung by various groups and choirs in different regions of huge Mother-Russia. It is sung off the stage by popular singers included. The song is beautiful. The author did not know details. The translation into English leaves little if any of what the words should have conveyed to a listener. Thanks anyway.
