Jacques Brel is a phenomenon, the best belgian singer and one of the best french-speaking singer ever... He has the voice, the interpretation and the lyrics for him... A real poet. Thanks for reacting to him.

This song is so moving "I would give you pearls of rain from a country where it does not rain, it is said that scorched lands give more wheat than a better April" It's so poetic.

Hi:-) I think most french speaking people know Jacques Brel, including younger ones. He really is a cultural monument. He was also a pretty good actor. Cheers😉

Yes, an excellent actor. But it's a real shame that his film "Le far west" was a commercial and critical failure, it affected him a lot.

@@tixien I have watched ALL of his live performances 😜 Here I was talking about movies, I said that he was an excellent actor. But in Far West he was also the director. I haven't watched the film but I just know that it had no succes, and Brel stopped doing movies. That's what's a shame.

Don't leave me, is a much better translation from the french than 'don't go away'. The translator might choosen the last one, because it goes better with the melody.
@XiaoVeen
@XiaoVeen 28 күн бұрын
@@estranhokonsta I'm not sure about that, the translation never matches the melody anyway. The translator can move away from the text, sometimes it's good and sometimes it's clumsy. But the worst, I have seen this, is when the translator is bad at French and doesn't understand the initial text well, then it's a disaster ! 😄

I'm 43 and Jacques Brel is One of a BEST Belgian singer who sings in French. his musical repertoire is immense the diversity of his songs, sad, happy, sometimes a little crazy, he is a timeless singer. there have been thousands of covers of his songs by various artists around the world but the original version is incomparable

Even though he was Belgian, Brel is one of the best French speaking singers ever with Georges Brassens, Edith Piaf, Leo Ferré, Charles Aznavour, Serge Gainsbourg and many others. You still have so much to discover. Back to your French roots!!!

Jacques Brel was a major inspiration for Leonard Cohen. His songs played everywhere in Montréal bars and on Québec radio in the 50s and 60s, together with Québec singer songwriters like Félix Leclerc, the first poet singer who dared come to the stage with only his guitar in 1934.

Even though he was from Belgium, Jacques Brel is a monument and most French like Belgian people know his songs, no matter what generation they are from. His voice, especially in live conditions, always give me shivers. Other great songs he sung that you can watch : Amsterdam, Quand on n'a que l'amour, Les Bourgeois or Le Plat Pays (a love song to his country) If I could suggest you other artists, I'd say Georges Brassens is also a moument of French Music (Supplique pour être enterré sur la plage de Sète, Les Copains d'Abord or Le Gorille are three of his most renown songs) and more recently, Orelsan had some amazing songs : I'm not a fan of rap music, but Notes pour trop tard, L'Odeur de l'Essence or Basique are really amazing songs. I love your reactions, you're one of the leaving proof that American people CAN be open to other cultures, and that's refreshing. I hope to see more reactions from you in the future!

Another famous song by Brel is "Mathilde". As all good French (incl Belgian French) poetry it has lots of double entendre. It can either be understood as him reacting to an somewhat abusive ex girlfriend returning to him. Or as a reference to his cancer returning after initially successful treatment... 🙄 Very French... 🤷‍♂️ I particularly like the modernized reprise by Chimene Badi. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZPRp4WApZx_rsksi=T0yi6y6HfvCVXbQc Which also shows that the classics don't get forgotten in France. French state owned TV actively works to retain its culture by having promising young artist re-do them on live television.

As another example of that, here is a dozen young(ish) female singers doing Jonny Hallydays 'Gabrielle'. Which is a bit strange as the song is about a young lady, his lover, driving him crazy yet keeping him in (virtual) chains... That's modern feminism, I guess... 🤷‍♂️ kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIamh4J8iaylpa8si=oWAeuyhmAtpgP-hI
