The leaves of elephant ear plants, like taro leaves, are toxic but they are EDIBLE. Many cultures use these leaves, especially taro leaves, in their cuisine. You just have to prepare and cook them well. For instance, the leaves are usually dried out under the sun before they are cooked. Perhaps your neighbor didn't know that your family was planning on eating them raw.

I personally had a similar experience with my great aunt and her daughter. They made a salad out of the spinach family growing wildly outside their house which was apparently poisonous and the both of them died hours after. They were both well into their age and healthy so everyone was shocked. We're Filipinos so we're used to picking up edible plants around the house or wherever we are but since they arrived in America, they probably assumed there was similar plants so yeah... I'm happy Mistermangobutt's grandpa and dad are safe, Steph!

That is so scary! Growing up in Hawaii, I was taught that taro (or elephant ear plants as you called it) is only edible if you thoroughly cook it. It’s pretty popular here, and I really like it cooked. Without cooking it, I was warned that the reaction to eating it feels like glass in your throat. I hope your family is OK. That neighbor definitely should have elaborated on the vital aspect of cooking it. 🤦‍♀️

the part about babysitting our parents is SO true lol! my parents were visiting their parents out of the country and had to quarantine for a week first, so they were staying in this cabin in a forest. i'm pretty knowledgeable about wild mushrooms, so they sent me photos of mushrooms asking if they were edible. i didn't recognize them bc i only know local plants/fungi, so i was like 'i have no idea but don't eat it.' no response. i followed up, "did you eat it????" no response. i didn't hear back from them for 24 friggin hours and thought they'd poisoned themselves smh

When I was younger, maybe 8 or 9, we had these pretty flowers growing in our yard. Me being the wonderful daughter that I am, wanted to pick these flowers for my mom. They were daffodils…and apparently a small percentage of people have an allergic reaction to these flowers. I am one of them! My mom didn’t have a reaction which is good. It’s a funny story now, but I had this crazy itchy rash that was only on my hands and it flared at night time, during the day it seemed to go away.

The taro leaves or the elephant ear leaves are in fact EDIBLE but you need to cook it first. Also in case of accident like these lime juice is helpful as it can dissolve the "needles". Even after cooking these can some time cause itching in throat so then also lime or lemon juice helps.

Reminded me of the time when my mother accidentally caught the chainsaw (electrical one) on to her sweater sleeves and it cut her arm (deep but nothing deep enough to hit bone), and I was in online class when this happened. She entered my room and told me about it nonchalantly… I freaked out because I have a immense fear for the sight of blood (there was a lot of blood). I actually ate a taro leaf when I was a child (it's really taro. We harvest the root for cooking). Apparently, I am allergic to raw taro, including the leaf. I was itchy AF. I cried and panicked and neighbors panicked too. It was an unforgettable childhood memory.

Taro is actually a very important plant for the Hawaiian culture, the most important thing about the plant is that you need to cook it VERY GOOD if not you’ll get very itchy. So you cannot eat this plant (taro) raw!

Eomeoni is going through grieving stages and it’s important to monitor because of how overwhelming emotional and mentally the process of accepting and moving forward can be. This can make them physically ill, especially if they already have health problems. I think therapy is important, at least so she can express herself without feeling she is making everyone uncomfortable. My grandmother departed/ past away two months ago and my mother unfortunately got physically ill a month after . Grieving is a very harsh awakening of how life is temporary, I hope Eomeoni is able to find comfort in moving forward without the emotional weigh of grieving. Sending prayers 🖤✨
