Lowell Mason, who wrote the tune for the Christmas song "Joy to the World" in 1836, may have been America's greatest composer of the nineteenth century. It is said that a Confederate army band played "Nearer, My God, to Thee" on the battlefield at Gettysburg. Incidentally, "San Francisco" is my favorite disaster film of all time.

I was watching Pastor Gary Kent talking about the Titanic, it was said that the Nurse mentioned, was helping row away from the sunken ship, as she recalled all she could remember hearing was the musicians playing this song on the deck, awaiting their death as the boat slowly sunk :(
