The first time I ever heard this piece was in the 1980's. Dr. Head played it as a prelude for a friend's wedding in Maryland. I already knew him as one of my adjudicators at solo and band competitions when I was in high school. After the wedding I approached him and told him I loved the piece and would like to know what it was so I could add it to my repertoire. When he told me what it was I turned a little red in the face, since I owned it but had only played the first and third movements. I didn't even know that I already had it. In the 40-some years since then I have played it many times, usually in somber church settings. The organists all know it well, since Peeters also published it as an organ solo.
