@@JohnGClancy Brilliant m8, the Allegro's had wipers as if set up for lefthand drive leaving an unwiped patch obscuring the drivers view! These idiosyncrasies are what endure these cars to me, take care & keep up the good work.

Brilliant 👍🏻 I'm from and live in Leyland. I also owned a montego once. A234 UYU. Gold with beige interior It was horrendous but I loved it

My Dad had two 1.6L company cars and my Mum had the diesel estate. They seemed pretty reliable but very dull.

You're clearly a BL enthusiast sirmugman. Great post. With regards to the logo on the TR7 engine that is a 'Swift' engine more commonly known as the 'Sprint' which was a 16 valve version of the Triumph slant 4. Only 60 or 61 genuine TR7 Sprints were built but this one is a mock-up done by the present owner who wanted a Brian Culcheth 1976/77 TR7 'works' rally car lookalike.

Hi John, this is a great video, however, why are so many poorly maintained vehicles allowed to be entered?
@JohnGClancy5 жыл бұрын
That is the main thrust of this how Ian - restoration. It's what makes it so interesting and so worthwhile. Usually on the TR Drivers Club stand we undertake major work to one or more cars but this year, owing to a change of personnel we had to take things a bit easy. Take a look at this one I did last year and you'll get an idea of the usual goings on: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4Cbi3pufb6goJI - The first thing you'll see is the TR7 in question being rolled on the Jersey Rally which we then set about repairing.

@@JohnGClancy Hi again John, thanks for the response, and the TR7 video is also great. It reminds me of the TR7 I was lucky enough to have as a company car many years ago when I worked for Leyland Australia, (which was a subsidiary of British Leyland International), also I was lucky enough to drive a Triumph Dolomite Sprint, (you could have any colour you liked as long as it was mustard with a black vinyl roof!), what wonderful days they were.

Being an official in the TR Drivers Club means I have a lot of TR7 related videos in the back catalogue but I have another fairly major one coming out soon to coincide with a Triumph World Magazine article. This will be my own TR7 story which goes back to the early 1980s. Last video I did for Triumph World was David Parnell and his pair of Dolomites. I think you'll quite like that one Ian. What a character he is and what a fabulous pair of Dollies.

Apart from the Mini, Leyland cars were unreliable rust buckets.
@JohnGClancy5 жыл бұрын
I can honestly and strongly refute that comment... Minis were certainly rust buckets. Quite unreliable at times too! But didn't the cars have identity, personality and distinctive styling.
@deathofcommonsense5 жыл бұрын
Hmm, no! Plus, I wanted good value for money and reliability.... Leyland offered neither. I even worked for them for 6 months and that put me off even more once I saw how they were built! Sorry but I don't have rose coloured glasses when it comes to Leyland cars.

It's the flaws and the history that forms a lot of the appeal. To save one of these cars gives a real sense of achievement. But some of them were built very well and have survived to the present day having had very little remedial work. Rare, but they do exist.
@deathofcommonsense5 жыл бұрын
I certainly understand saving the history of the British car industry, as a 19yo in 1970 bought a dilapidated MG TD and spent every penny I had on keeping it alive for a year but would not have done that for a Morris 1100!
@JohnGClancy5 жыл бұрын
The subframes would have been rotted out on an 1100 by then so very difficult to justify saving one of those. Very few seem to have survived despite them being everywhere during the 1970s.
