I think it is also possible that LeBlanc was in part genuine when telling Mel that they want to avoid the Hextech calamity, after all, preventing world-ending events kinda seems to be their whole Spiel -which is also why Ruination is so fucking infuriating, like seriously, the Black Rose didn't even *_try_* shit to stop the Ruined King ?? So yeah, they wanted : - Revenge on Ambessa - Averting the Hextech calamity - Recruiting Mel/Awakening her power. So overall, LeBlanc managed a good chunk of her goals, after all, if Mel travels back to Noxus, whether or not she's part of the Black Rose doesn't matter much : If Mordekaiser comes back, Mel will be there to fight it with her awakened powers.

Non League person here. Just a big Arcane fan. I kinda figured the Black Rose was a shady cabal with access to dark magic, but maybe had some complex motives. I likened them to the Bene Gessirit of Dune. I also appreciated that Riot/Fortiche left them as a mystery in Arcane. I was even hesitant to watch this video, but curiosity got the best of me. Now that i have watched, i see that the Rose are kinda opposite to the BG, in that the BG want to create an all powerful being whereas the BR want to stop one. The lore for this world is really deep and i appreciate that. But, i appreciate even more the way Arcane made a small piece of that fantasy-based lore very relatable to the real world with themes of family, loss, class struggle, false prophets, and regret.

What's interesting about that parallel is that while the Bene Gesserit project an image of benevolence while having goals that are ultimately malevolent, the Black Rose appear _extremely_ malevolent but their goals are ultimately fairly benevolent. Also, _don't_ play League, it is essentially the Smash Bros equivalent of the lore.

Important to distinguish the Sunborn from the Darkin, I know after the fall of Azir the Sunborn got mad and started being called Darkins by the locals, but they were essentially still Sunborn, most of them heavily altered by bloodmagic but not yet fully Darkins What Jax and his elite warriors killed was a sunborn, I belive the war of Icathia was many years before Azir's fall, so he wouldn't even be able to find a Darkin yet After Miysha's ritual and methods of sealing them inside their weapons, as far as I know they became immortal, they could no longer been destroyed, that's why they got sealed inside wells throughout Runeterra And that's why Aatrox wants to end the world, he thinks that if the world dosen't exist anymore, so won't he Vladimir was only able to kill his Darkin master because he wasn't trapped inside his weapon so he was essentially just a Sunborn called by another name after messing with bloodmagic

Reducing the Black Rose to “they want to fight Mordekaiser” is doing a disservice to them. Sure, Le Blanc knows she will have to deal with Mordekaiser, eventually, and she plans accordingly. But she also does other things. For example, in the game “Mageseeker” it is revealed she is trying to weaken Demacia, so Noxus can finally conquer it (Noxus has been defeated by Demacia more than a few times in the past, and Demacia actually has alliances in place against Noxus). Another aspect Necrit downplays but it was quite prominent in Arcane is the Black Rose is a wizard supremacist faction. This is made extremely clear by the way Le Blanc interacts first with Mel (“sister”, because she’s a wizard) and then with Ambessa (who is not a wizard). This is particularly relevant in the context of the Noxus vs Demacia dynamic, because Demacia is the “anti magic faction”, so it makes sense for the Black Rose to want to destroy it.

@ first off, Le Blanc is not mortal, as Necrit mentions she’s at least as old as Mordekaiser. Second, the point I was making is the Black Rose does not solely exist to prevent Morde’s return, they do things in other places (like Ionia, Piltover or Shurima if Demacia is not enough) for other reasons. The organization does devote a lot of resources to stop Morde from coming back, but there’s more to them than just stopping the return of the Iron Ravenant.

Additional speculation: LeBlanc told Mel that she is an "empath, attuned to the etheral - able to sense inner selves". I feel like LeBlanc may be weary of Mel's powers because it could potentially challenge LeBlanc's mystery. Kinda like how a spy treasures their real identity. But instead of killing her, she values Mel more as an ally since she is also probably a powerful mage. I also think this was Mel's plan - she basically used Ambessa to lure LeBlanc - to ambush LeBlanc and finally avenge Kino. I think this is why Mel says "I see your face, deceiver" because now Mel knows how LeBlanc looks like, or what LeBlanc truly is (since she is an empath). Lastly, this is pure speculation, but what if Mel eventually becomes LeBlanc's foil - now that she is probably heading to Noxus, Mel could use her political prowess to gain influence (under the Medarda name of course). This could potentially rival LeBlanc because essentially both of them are mages that are after influence, but one is shady, while another one seems to be trustworthy. Mel is also probably immune to LeBlanc's shady tactics because she has the right power to deal with LeBlanc's deception, being an empath.

So imagine someone gifted (mage) have some sort of power. However, you're correct - i dont think she doesn't stand a chance against LeBlanc's empire, however what Mel does have is a specific talent that could (potentially) be a bigger thorn for LeBlanc. I also imagine Mel also joining other houses (Swain maybe?) as a way for her to get influence, being the fox and the wolf that she is.

As someone who knows Runeterra lore for a couple years, i always think that Leblanc's motives with the Black Rose are certainly not just to either prevent Mordekaiser from coming to the physical world and contain him inside the Bastion or somehow destroy him before coming out. It seems that either herself or many members of the Rose indeed want power for themselves either to just rule over Noxus or slowly expanding around Valoran and Shurima. They or she might think that a rule under their equally brutal and austere leadership might make a safer world or they are just totally corrupt with power, simple as that. At least that what i believe Leblanc's plans could be, after being done with Mordekaiser in case someone asks her ,"and after that, what then?". It could be kind of interesting to see how her character and the Rose's ideals changed or still change throughout the eras( be it in another series or book etc..)making their motives more complex,than just stopping Mordekaiser.

​@@dspace4514 Thing is, as you said, this plotpoint really didn't take much screentime, AND could also just work perfectly as a plot device for the Piltovian plotline in Arcane.The Black Rose is : Ambessa's Noxian enemies which motivate her to take a hold over hextech, and also fuel Mel's awakening as a mage. People are saying that the plotline was pointless, but without it, how do you justify any of what Ambessa is doing ? -and how do you transform Mel into a mage to add her to League and sell skins ?- The Black Rose allowed Ambessa to be a more complex character than just "I'm an evil meany that wants power even if it hurts my daughter." I agree that if you take Arcane as a standalone work, the Black Rose plotline was not the masterpiece of world-coherence it is when you have context of the lore... but also it's more than fine ? It's really not that deep.

@@math9172 there will not be another show. They experimented with Arcane, and it utterly failed in the one arena that matters: money. For Season 1, Riot hired an exec to oversee their “shows and entertainment” department. That exec left suddenly after Arcane season 2 finished, and went to go work for HBO Max. She said in her farewell that it was “bittersweet,” meaning not her decision. Also also, if they were going to do more shows, the end scene of Bite Marks would’ve just been in the end credits of Arcane. I can just about swear to you that it was initially there before they realized they weren’t getting the backing to do any more. So, now the “story” of Arcane will continue in-game / books / whatever else, but no more shows. Fortiche even laid off half their animation staff because now that Arcane is done they don’t need them. Pretty obvious what’s happening.

I think the thing Ambessa stole, was the father's seed. Or rather the unborn Mel. The Black Rose doesn't just recruit powerful kids, they breed them aswell by setting up specific marriages. I don't think Kino and Mel have the same father's. And I think Mel's father was a mage with a special kind of power, like how Anne's mother passed her powers to her daughter. Like maybe the father had a power he couldn't control, so they breed him with Ambessa, with her Amazonian physique and unbreakable will, hoping thier child would inherit her qualities and his power.

I have some questions that I hope Necrit, or any lore-savvy would be able to answer for me: 1. The 3 leaders of Noxus, do they know each other well and interact with each other often? How is the relationship between them? 2. What would a normal Noxus citizen know about the immortal bastion? How do they think it is built? Is it just a big monument that is inaccessible to them for some reason? 3. If Vladimir suffers from memory loss cause his brain can't retain all of the memories, what about Leblanc? Does she use some kind of magic to keep herself sane? If so why doesn't she use it to help her friend Vladimir out?

Mordekaiser and LeBlanc's partnership reminded me of Shao Khan and Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat. Big megalomaniac who's obsessed with conquest and a master of deception who will betray you at every turn. Then you have Vladimir and Quan Chi both manipulate the dead and learned from and serve a more stronger entity (Shinnok / Darkins). Eventually Shang Tsung and Quan Chi form a Deadly Alliance to finally topple Shao Kahn. And that's what happened with Leblanc and Vladimir vs Mordekaiser.

They lost $200 million, and the league player base has 30 million less players NOW than it did after season ONE dropped

I don't know everything so I might be wrong but here is my theory: Ambessa delivered a powerful mage, the Black Rose approaches her. Ambessa knows that the child is Mel, but tells the Black Rose that it is Kino since Ambessa knows some of the Black Rose and want to learn more of what they are doing. They train Kino in trust of Ambessa but notice that he ain't the one. Ambessa then sends Mel away because during this time Ambessa has been trying to learn more about to black rose while keeping "the power" for her own. My theory (based on Ambessa's trailer) is that she was destined to become the Chosen of the Wolf to fight against Mordekaiser, because Kindred can only chase dying people, not already dead people who came back as a living armor, so they needed a herald, a bit like the manifestation from Targon. However, Leblanc All Along wanting to keep control of Noxus wasn't really okay with Ambessa becoming so powerful and taking over Noxus while getting rid of the Rose.

i can only think of 2 flaws in the story. black rose and jace not telling viktor what he saw when he was talking trough the other person or when he saw him. everything else is just people not comprehending trauma and complaining about characters making seemingly stupid decisions wich are actually just enforced by lack of trust and pain.

I know this is stretch but i think Mel will be connected to the Sentinals of Light. With her magic and her metal tattoos looking very similar to Sentinal/Helia magic. Senitals being similar to the Black Rose in preventing massive cataclysms. I think why we didn't see the Black Rose responding to the Ruination because the Sentinals already where handling it.
