I know everybody likes to talk about prophetic this film is and all that, and yeah, sure it is but can we just talk about how well crafted this movie is? I mean the way it weaves in and out from being hardline commentary to full-on satire, being deathly serious one minute and then operatic and over the top the next. It juggles it's tone so well and this scene perfectly exemplifies it. I love how Beatty goes from booming voice of angry elder god to dropping it completely down to Earth for "Am I getting through to you, Mr. Beale?"

Cotygeek - I was going to say something very similar...no matter how one feels about the "issues" in the story -- which are just good old boilerplate paranoia, populist rage, and corporate evil -- it's the delivery that made this movie the electric experience that it was. Sensational writing, acting, and directing. (Oh, and marketing! Do not forget how perfectly-timed the arrival of this film was, back in cynical, recession-and-Watergate-exhausted 1976.)

I first saw this scene years ago and it’s stuck with me ever since. The way he transitions so flawlessly from violent screaming to softly speaking to Beale is so natural and powerful given the character he’s playing, and the whole visual with the lamps on the table is just beautiful. Paddy Chayefsky was a genius and half a century ahead of his time. I have watched ‘Network’ numerous times, and every time it’s more enjoyable and at the same time very sad. This is not a satire as many critics have opined, but a disturbing state of affairs in modern day America. William Holden and Ned Beatty also should have won the Oscar. @intsoccersuperstar1

+Edward Black Not saying I believe it, but Arthur Jensen (Beatty's character) tells you why we accept their rule in his speech: "...and our children, Mr. Beale, will live to see that perfect world, in which there is no war, or famine, oppression, or brutality. One vast and ecumenical holding company, for whom all men will work to serve the common profit, in which all men will hold a share of stock. All necessities provided, all anxieties tranquilized. All boredom amused." I think Jensen thinks that if you let religions or nations rule, you wind up with things like the Crusades, the Holocaust, WWI, and WWII. Yeah, corporate rule sucks...but usually the worst they'll try to do is poison you with high-fructose corn syrup, or there will be a 1-in-10,000 chase that your car will accelerate on its own, killing you in a firey crash. Jensen will tell you religion and nations had their chance to rule in the past, and what did they do with the thousands of years of human history they ruled? Wars, wars, and more wars. Destruction and killing. Jensen and people like him believe the rule of corporations is preferable to the rule of religions or nations.

An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.” ---- @13755---It is with no joy the flag is upside down.....we are in a state of distress. We have elected inept leaders that seem hell-bent on the destruction of us all.

I was mesmerized by this film the acting from everyone was fantastic. The script was incredible and with each passing minute the movie got better and better. I don't know if there will ever be a movie like this again. Thank goodness for that I'm actually glad because that makes this film unique it doesn't fit in a nice little box like the movies of today. This scene portrays a key fact that too many are unaware of. Those who don't get caught in the distractions of celebrity and pop-culture nonsense tend to get caught in the distractions of geopolitics. None of that is real, but there is an underlying reality which paints a very different picture and it will allow you to understand the shape of things now, and possibly the shape of things to come.

navblue20 Just before he launches into this speech, the Ned Beatty character (Arthur Jensen, the network owner) introduces himself to Howard Beale by saying something like, "You know, I started off as a salesman. I was a pretty good salesman in my time. And now I'd like to sell you an idea." (Or words to that effect.)

John Osman (Continued...) So he "sold" his idea using the same rhetorical style as a southern preacher selling religion. It was an inspired approach Beatty adopted.

Like everyone else has commented already- this IS one of THE greatest scenes in film of all time. You can learn more about the nature of Life on Earth by watching this scene than by absorbing the entire output of all the newspapers on Earth for one day. The World IS a Business!" And- it is priceless how Mr Beale sit's in awe- and then meekly asks' "why me?", "because you're on Television Dummy!"

I wonder what Kubrick thought of this scene. Beatty is so good it's like a 3rd entity, another alien or ghostly presence is in the room with them. Something Kubrick exceeds at effecting. Lynch, too, come to think of it.

What makes his delivery so good is he's mimicking Howard's ranting style to make it easier to manipulate him into changing his message. He knows he has a better chance of getting Howard to see his worldview if he expresses it in Howard's way instead of his own. You can tell when he breaks character on a dime at 2:16.

Network is a particularly poignant movie in the 2020 freakout pandemic. And Ned Beatty is in my Top 5 of character actors, this scene particularly. The irony is half of the corporations he mentioned are gone/merged.

THE best scene in moving picture box history in my not so humble opinion. What amazes me, well, one of many things, so-What most amazes me about this scene is that every time I watch it, I sit here flabbergasted, completely mirroring the expressions that Beale's face and body language emote vicariously through my face and body language, 100% goddamned hypnotized by Ned Beatty. It's like I am represented on screen as that character, and that character is just me watching that character. There's some kind of infinite regress and/or irreducable complexity at play...that makes sense, right?
