It's called, military style. The NHS Band has been marching this way for many decades. They have won sweepstakes for decades as well. That's NEDERLAND for you. We never settled for mediocre. They strive for perfection and they have no problem achieving that. Being in band you learn discipline and persistence. Nederland has always been blessed with great band directors. The Nederland School district is much harder and has higher standards than most schools in Jefferson County. I'm proud to say that I went to school in Nederland. I hope that EVERY student doesn't get cheated by their school politics and nepotism like they did in 1978 with the valedictorian and salutatorian fraudulent act. Ask some of the honor students that graduated from Nederland in 1978. If you want the truth, look me up. My sister, Vickie Marshall Rhoden Passmore was ripped off. You would think that the highest ranking senior would have been the valedictorian. At every class reunion it gets mentioned. My sister was shy and very timid. I'm not and NEVER WILL BE! I was too young to speak up back then. Yes, Nederland is a good school district, but you better speak up when their shady politics and nepotism victimizes your child or family member. Don't worry about what other people will say and think. Small towns think they won't have to answer to anyone. I hope that what happened in 1978 pierces their heart and soul. They know who they are. I mean, there are just some bands that opt not to go to area contest... even before the creation of the state military contest.
