I especially like you're comment at the end that listening to someone's music is like listening to the decisions they've made - nice way of thinking about it

The "MIDI" button under "OUTPUT" gives you the option to link it to any of your VST's, so you're not stuck with the internal sounds, also the nine central buttons are linked to the headers, i.e if you press the top left button you will get something " Simple" and "Light" if you press the one in the centre you would get something "Complex" and "Dark" etc, it's laid out like a graph, also you can just drag and drop the patterns you generate into your DAW to play on any instrument, or edit them further, just click and hold the little icon to the left of the star icon in the "MELODY BANK" and drag it into your DAW, hope that helps a bit.

Good on you for calling out those annoying crybaby "producers." If anything, they should be glad that novice producers will stay in their lanes with VSTs catered to continuing to make more of the same "generic pop music" sounds, leaving room to breathe for the inventive composers who want to carve out their own niche. That being said, tools like this shouldn't be so frowned upon. DAWs got the same rap for dumbifying production I am certain back when computers upped their ante on processing power and reduced the need for other studio hardware. People should just get over the gatekeeping crap and let other people create music their own ways and let these devs make some cash for their hard work. 😛😛

Good comment. I love using generative tools because otherwise I just come up with similar ideas via my MIDI keyboard. I like “comping”/editing out snippets of generated melodies, tweaking them in the piano roll, creating chord progressions in Scaler. It’s all about enjoying what you do and enjoying the end result.

At 120bpm, you were well outside the range of intended use for best results for the selected genre(s). It probably would have sounded better if you slowed it a bit.

I wonder if the selection of style has something to do with which chords were available? For whatever reason, in the second instance of the plugin it looks like it only wants to give you C major's dominant 7, the G7, while the first one you made has A minor's dom7, E7, as well as the G7, and also some extras like b dim. The second one, set on a Pop style, looks like it's restricted to the Major and minor triads of each letter in the Major scale/natural minor scale selected (though no Major VII triad for some reason), plus the Major triads for the chromatic notes that aren't in the scale (just so you at least have one option for a chord on every note I guess? though no Gb/F#...), plus the V dom7 because ya just gotta have V dom7 and have done since the beginning of classical music. (It's weird that they give you b minor but don't give you b dim, especially when they give you G7 which is a b dim over a G) The original one with the RnB style looks like it's giving you some extras, like the chords you get if you include the melodic minor scale, so raised 6th and 7th notes (raised 4th and 5th in major), giving you III7 (vi's dominant, eg E is a 5th above A), vii (ii in minor, b minor in this case), plus that Abdim7 (dim7 built on leading tone for minor key for maxxxximum cruuuuunch), plus the major AND minor triads for some chromatic notes as well. It seems weirdly convoluted, I wonder how they went about choosing the different sets of chords. TLDR it looks like that issue you were having with finding the E7 could be because the RnB style's chords are spookier than the Pop style's, sorry for all the stoned music theory

Hey Ned! Great video! FYI the pads are a matrix in the columns you have the melody complexity (simple/complex/both) and in the rows you have the tone of the melody (light/dark/both). Cheers!

Good overview from a complete beginners perspective! Wish they had a free trial. Might just buy this and see how I get on. Had a crushingly non-creative spell over the weekend realizing I'm simply not a musician! Maybe this will give me some inspiration! Don't like the internal sounds though so will use my own...

Ned, you can drag the melodies to your DAW, so you can apply them to any instrument and edit them in the piano roll. The other thing is it would have been an idea to play them with a prepared chord progression in the DAW (so you could choose any instrument like a pad) to give the melodies more context. I love your rant at the end. Muscle memory on the guitar or keyboard can be a limitation. We tend to reach for the same licks, the same phrasing. I like generative tools to “mine” for melodies I wouldn’t have thought of. The biggest joy in composing is discovering ideas. The discovery is the thing for me, not that I had to come up with it on a keyboard or guitar. Ultimately the creative part is putting all these ideas into some kind of composition.
