I love the inclusion of Helen, here, because at the time, Helen was the most sought after princess in Greece. And yet, despite her cousin being the Most Beautiful Human Woman Alive, Penelope found herself the center of a plucky young King of Ithaca’s attention. It’s also funny that Odysseus chose to ask one of the Three Eternal Maidens of Olympus for advice on courting a woman. Athena knows many things, but romance isn’t up her alley.

Marvelous!! I love that you portray the original myth, within what the lyrics of the song allow. I find it charming that Odysseus falls in love with Penelope while he is competing for Helen's hand, and being distracted by seeing her is what causes him to lose. I congratulate you very much for researching to make this animation.
@juliusroman8616Ай бұрын
wait can you tell me about the original myth?
@elsie8757Ай бұрын
@@juliusroman8616 I can! (Hopefully OP doesn't mind). Basically, a whole bunch of people were competing for the hand of Helen of Sparta, not just because she was beautiful, but because she was also, y'know. Literally a princess, so marrying her would be politically advantageous for whichever suitor she chose. (This is also the reason why Penelope has to deal with so many suitors while Ody is lost at sea.) Anyway, Helen's dad was worried that regardless of who won the competition for her hand, the losers would uh. _Not take it well._ So young Odysseus approached him with an idea: make it a condition of the contest that if you are _not_ the one Helen chooses, you will swear an oath to protect and defend her marriage with the winner. That way, nobody can raise a stink about not being chosen without getting in a whole lot of trouble. Odysseus's request in exchange for this advice, was for Helen's dad to put in a good word for him with Penelope, Helen's cousin. (He was originally one of the suitors for Helen's hand, but A) he realized he probably wasn't going to win, and B) by this point he'd decided he liked Penelope way better anyways.) Incidentally, this whole situation ends up being the reason Ody later has to go and fight in the Trojan War-- when Helen is kidnapped, as one of the guys who originally competed in the marriage contest, Ody was now obligated to help her husband Menelaus get her back.
@julianetcheverryАй бұрын
@@juliusroman8616 You’ve been given quite a complete answer, but I’d like to add a few details: A) Helen didn’t choose Menelaus from all her suitors. It was Tyndareus, her stepfather, who made the choice. B) As I mentioned, Tyndareus is Helen's stepfather, not her father. Helen's father is Zeus. Penelope is the daughter of Icarius, Tyndareus's brother. Therefore, while Penelope is Helen’s cousin, they have no blood relation. C) In the version I’m familiar with (though I don’t dismiss the other version), Odysseus only met Penelope after making his agreement with Tyndareus. Knowing he likely couldn’t win Helen's hand (or that it would be very difficult), he gave Tyndareus the counsel in exchange for the hand of another woman from his family. Tyndareus offered him Penelope. D) This is more of an extra detail, but it’s said that Icarius, Penelope’s father, wasn’t at all happy that his brother had, so to speak, “given away” his daughter to a stranger. Icarius then told Odysseus he would only accept their marriage if Odysseus could first beat him in a race. Odysseus won. So, keeping his word, Icarius said it was fine, and that he could marry her-on the condition that they stay in Sparta. Odysseus refused, saying he would take Penelope back to Ithaca. Icarius then chased after them, and before they could board the ship, he begged his daughter to stay with him in Sparta. Odysseus then asked her what she wanted to do: stay with Icarius or go with him to Ithaca. Penelope didn’t respond directly, but with a gesture, she made it clear she chose Odysseus. Only then did Icarius calm down, knowing his daughter wasn’t being taken away by force, and he let them go. This story teaches us that not all parents in mythology are terrible. And it also shows us that Penelope did fall in love with Odysseus from the start.
