Do you feel like your drawings are too flat and need more form? When you start using the 3 types of lines I’m introducing in this video your drawings will immediately have better volume.
Generating a proper sense of 3-dimensional structure doesn’t have to be uber-technical and confusing. You don’t even need to bother much with perspective.
In this video I’ll explain which 3 types of lines to use to achieve better forms in your figure drawings and demonstrate these insights in 4 different examples with both figure and animal subject matters.
After this lesson you’ll understand that there’s no need to randomly copy outlines to create a quicksketch drawing with believable form, but instead, you simply need to remember where to place the form-producing lines.
Materials I use in this video: Smooth Newsprint paper, Wolff’s Carbon pencil 4B

Your welcome! It's true, the principles are simple, but putting them into practice can become tricky because of our autopilot mode of doing things. But keep coming back to this simple idea and it'll help 😊

Hey Caroline I noticed that I have problem with "looking into detail or mesuring and camparing too much".I dont know how to explain it but I look into details too much, in part where you draw white horse, I'm looking at your drawing and my mind is comparing it thinking your drawing dosent even look close as horse in image.Things that I compare are so small and sudden like forehead is more wide ears are more far apart or this part of leg is thinner or thicker mouth is more open, hope you get what I'm saying.I have troble focusing and looking at overall simple form even if I see whole form in simple ways like circle or rectangle I forget to draw it that way. I am not sure how to fix it or just exercise my mind to not think that way. For example Ive been last month or so learning anatomy of wolves and I know basic forms and where are which muscles and what part would be flexible what not, but when time for drawing comes and I use image as reference again I focus too much on small details that are not important which makes whole drawing look bad because again I forget to look at proportions first or think about simple shapes and center lines. When I remove drawing and look at it from time to time f5-10 seconds) again I want to look for those tiny details. One more thing I have trouble underatanding even if I know anatomy is how much shoulder of animal can rotate or turn while animal is running or idk jumping and somethims hips and anckles of backleg can be tricky to draw especially when I have to draw wolf or a dog facing me but his back legs are visible. I think I understand the form and have an idea how they should look but I have trouble putting that on paper or maybe the way I imagine things is wrong. If you have any advice please let me know It would be very helpful.

I love this question! It shows that you're really grappling to understand how this all works. Before we can get you to improve your drawings I first need you to understand the following: So far you've been going about drawing in a certain way that was based on what attracts your attention first. As regular people we usually notice things like textures (shiny or scruffy fur, or curly hair) and small, interesting details (like eyes, noses, etc.) first. Nothing to feel bad about, we all start some place. You have now gotten to a place in your drawing pursuits where you notice that this hasn't led you to the best results and you recognize the need to try a new way. And this is where it gets tricky. #1 because physiologically, your brain has calibrated neurological pathways that it uses by now automatically when it deals with drawing (like grabbing onto those details first). Think of them as well-trodden grooves that it's easy for your brain to slip into. Trying the different way is more like having to navigate a jungle for you brain, because it hasn't forged those neurological connections yet. So simply know that you will slip back into auto-pilot for quite a while in the beginning and your job at first is to just start noticing when that's happening. The more you notice it happening the more you'll get a chance to adjust course. #2 You'll now have to integrate drawing exercises that will look and feel VERY different from what you're used to. When you draw like that you'll think "this looks nothing like the horse/person/tree/...", which is true... not YET. But as properly trained artists we understand that we as artists don't just copy, but instead we distill out certain essences of a subject matter FIRST, before we move on to add more and more specific details, and most importantly, that there's a certain sequence in which we add this additional information. it's not random. Which is nice to know, because once you get this sequence you won't feel so overwhelmed anymore. I outline this in much more detail in my free masterclass, so feel free to watch that here: draw.clickfunnels.com/seperate-webinar-opt-in-page1666717801595 So when you draw your wolves, instead of thinking "I need to practice drawing wolves and their anatomy (anatomy=details)" think: "I need to practice seeing the gesture by a wolf in action, the characteristic shapes of different wolf poses (watch my: Shape exercise for practicing drawing from imagination video for this), the simple forms of the wolf's building blocks,... and eventually a few stand out anatomical elements and textural characteristics." And instead of doing this all in one drawing with the pressure of needing the drawing to look like a pretty wolf, you make this into a multi-day, multi-week practice routine where you tackle one principle at a time. I'm so excited for you taking your next step in your artistic growth journey. Don't let the frustration stop or unsettle you. It's simply a sign that you are ready for the next growth stage. Best of luck! You've got this 😉
