It depends on what you define as the core. Do I think a team with Sabonis, Turner, LeVert, Brogdon, etc. can make it to the conference finals? No. Do I think they could if they make smart trades and continue to make good draft picks? It’s very possible. This off-season (and maybe deadline we’ll see) is the most important for their franchise in many many years IMO.

🔥 rebuild as usual. Wrt to IND, I like to see Sabonis and Myles Turner both being encouraged to let it fly from 3. If Sabonis can hit like ~35% on ~3att that’d help a lot. As for Turner, he’s been taking like 5 a game and hitting like 42%. I don’t expect him to shoot 40%+, but if he can really sustain ~37%+ on ~4-5att that’d make him sooo much more valuable than being like a 33% type guy from 3 ball. I’m using so much of my post on those two because I think this off-season is the time to truly make a decision. If Turner raises his value by showing he can be this good of a shooter on volume, while still being a prolific shot blocker, and his rebounds and FTA are up, he should have a lot of trade value. I think Carlisle and the front office are using this year to see what they really have and figure out how they want to move forward. They locked up Brogdon on a really good deal. LeVert only has this year and next left on his deal. Justin Holiday has this year and next. Then TJ Warren is expiring. Hopefully TJ Warren is back by like the end of December and can come back and show his value before the deadline. Since he’s expiring it’d be hugely beneficial to them if he could even come back and play like 25-30 games before the deadline and really show out. That way they can either trade him for good value, or decide they want to keep him going forward and not be forced to have a tough situation this off-season. Like I said I think this is mainly an evaluation year. Obviously I’m sure they want to do well, but I think the most important part is figuring out their future. They’re not a contending team and moves 100% have to be made at the deadline and this off-season. Hopefully they have a decent pick to add to Duarte who looks like he’ll be a good piece of the team for a while. They also need to figure out what their plan is for guys like Goga, Brissett, Kelan Martin, and Isaiah Jackson. So ya I don’t have high hopes for them this season. I always thought they’d likely be a play-in team, and that might be best for them. They can add another pick in the teens, and make some moves this off-season to solidify their future. Long post, and I’m not even an IND fan, lol. Just a fascinating team with regards to where they are right now. I think Carlisle will have a lot of say on personnel moves also. Not like he’s a co-GM or anything, but I expect him to have a lot more power than a normal HC. From now to the deadline, the draft, and free agency, they have a lot of work to do and I’m fascinated to see what they decide to do.

I think in two years with a healthy core of Brogdon LeVert Sabonis and Duarte presumably they will continue to improve given their youth the Pacers could be contenders in the East forsure their depth is strong with Warren , McConnell and Turner
