How does a magnet find wood?
@NeedItMakeIt4 жыл бұрын
It finds the wood by finding the fastener that connects the drywall to the framing. The days most drywall is connected with drywall screws, they used to use nails, and before that we had plaster and lath, and this method would likely still work for those as well, though that would only be for very old homes. An electronic stud finder can find a stud without locating the fastener, but it is too slow and I don't always keep it in my tool pouch, the magnet is my go-to. Thanks for the comment!

@@NeedItMakeIt so you are not finding the horizontal location of the stud, you have to find the exact spot where a drywall screw is, but then that indicates a stud?

Easy to knock on wall

Most of us don't have hearing sensitive enough for knocking to work. The main key with the magnet is that you leave it in place until the fastener goes in. I've trimmed entire houses using the magnet technique, it is very quick accurate and cheap.

I have found knocking to give inconsistent results. It doesn't work well in places where the drywall is not tightly fastened to the studs. This can happen if the studs are warped or if they are missing a corner.
