Jenny Jen maybe I can try my best to clarify some things about Christianity for you. I’ve been raised in Christianity my whole life and am a strong and avid believer in Jesus Christ. I get where you’re coming from and I see and understand your point of view. I understand your question and the way you’re looking at it. I believe the perspective here in this song and in Christian songs in general and in Christianity in general is that not necessarily are we these despicable horrible evil monsters that are tryin our best to find our way to God. The perspective is that because God is holy, righteous, and perfect, then anything fallen short of His standard is deemed logically as imperfect. And that’s where we are as human beings... imperfect. What makes us imperfect is the sin that we commit because that sin is contrary to the holy standard if God. If we never committed sin then we would be perfect and therefore in no need for forgiveness from a holy and righteous God. Even if we are not murderers or liars or humanizers or thieves, we still all have sinned in some way or fashion, even if it is the slightest and smallest infraction. Romans 3:23 of the Holy Bible says “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (KJV). Sin is sin, no matter how big or small we like to classify it. In God’s eyes, the smallest infraction in our eyes is not seen that way in God’s eyes. Because He is perfect, sin to Him is sin. He doesn’t look at it as “big sin” or “small sin” like we humans do. So my point is that I don’t believe the perspective here is that we are so terrible but rather that because we have sinned that we should be cut off and done away with because it is absolutely contrary to God’s holy standard. But the thing is God doesn’t cut us off and throw us away although he has every right too. He loves us so much that He made a way through Jesus Christ that we can be reconciled to Him even though we are sinners. He wants us, everything about us. That’s how much He loves... even when He doesn’t have too. He’s God He doesn’t necessarily need us but rather He wants us. And that’s where this is coming from. “Who am I to be loved by you” is in essence saying “I have fallen short of your glory God but yet you love me anyway... who am I too deserve this when I’m imperfect and you are perfect.” So not necessarily that we are terrible creatures but rather that we are sinners. You can be a good person but still a sinner, so therefore being a sinner doesn’t make you a terrible horrible rotten person either unless you choose to go down the path to being that way. The God of Christianity, unlike almost any other religion in the world, is not looking down on us with a spear ready in His hand to strike us down at our first mistake or if we don’t pray or offer sacrifices to Him enough. He loves us with a deep and unimaginable love. Alot of religion’s gods are sadistic narcissistic pretty much evil beings that destroy their followers if they don’t get enough sacrifices made to them. I know not all religion’s gods are like that but alot are. And the God of Christianity, who I believe to be the one and only true God, is totally opposite of most religion’s gods.
