For a very long time Isshin was only hinted at being a captain by the white haori he wraps to his shoulder while in Shinigami form but you could never see its symbol. Also many of the squads' past captains and histories have been talked about but when it comes to Squad 10's past it has been unclear or very few bits of information are available and it was always avoided to discuss Squad 10's past. So now we see the reason why and it is confirmed Isshin was the Squad 10 captain prior to Hitsugaya and also a member of the Shiba clan. He was Isshin Kiba before he used the name Kurosaki.

Here's a funny thing. I just watched your reaction of episode 41 and its funny how the puzzle solves. In the episode Ichigo first met Byakuya, Byakuya says to Rukia that she is doing this because it reminds her of "him". Him being Kaien Shiba. Ukitake was Rukia's captain, and they both had to end Kaien Shibas life. Ganju mentions that they are brothers, and Byakuya in episode 41 tells Ukitake: He's not the man that flashed through your mind. (Being Kaien Shiba). Now finally, it's revealed that Ichigo and Kaien Shiba are cousins, hence why they look alike, kind of. Great foreshadowing imo, it got alot of "main discussion" attention but still didnt really make more sense other than that they look similar.

So initially Kubo intended to kill byakuys for real, but he got so many hate letters from fan that he was forced to bring him back. That's sad cause it was a perfect death. Symoblising the end of the initial soul society in a way, with yama dying with his old ways of nit relying on anything else than shinigamis and byakuya, THE representation and definition of a noble family shinigami, that neant so much. Even more, his development as a character was incredible, from the noble shinigami who disobeyed his parents and broke the rules to marry a sick, lowly civilian from the rukongai disctrict, to the grief caused by the deaths of both his wife and his parents, to the first he swore to take care of rukia, and the seconds swore to maintain the rules of the soul society as a perfect noble, putting hi in the morale struggle of enforcing the rules to keep his promess that he already broke once by marrying or saving his sister who was sentenced to death. That same character evolved to a point where he admitted his mistake and begged A HUMAN to save the soul society he failed to protect. The parallel between both characters representing the "old ways" of the soul society dying, one by sticking to his ways and traditions and ultimately failing because of that and the other dying while giving the way to the future, represented by ichigo. It's sad that they didn't change that in the anime, many thougth and hope that with kubo being behind the writing of tybw anime, he could tell the stroy as he originally wished to.

So, I'm a bit unsure if 0 Squad is more powerful than the Gotei 13 including Yamamoto, but I think they are. Two of 0 squad were previously part of the Gotei 13 (the 2 women) but I think its implied that the other 3 came before the gotei 13 were a thing. I'm not sure about that though. Maybe it will be explained a bit more in detail in later episodes. But considering episode 9 its highly likely that at least Nimaiya Ōetsu came before the Gotei 13 were a thing. Which furthers the thought that at least the monk came before the Gotei 13 or is at least far stronger than the Gotei 13 (including Yamamoto) since he is the leader of Squad 0
