Neem Karoli Baba ~ 𝐍𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 ~ Bhakti

Neem Karoli Baba or Neeb Karori Baba (c. 1900 -1973), known to his followers as Maharaj-ji, was a Hindu guru and a devotee of the Hindu deity Hanuman. Baba was a lifelong adept of bhakti yoga, and encouraged service to others (seva) as the highest form of unconditional devotion to God. In the book Miracle of Love, compiled by Ram Dass, a devotee named Anjani shares the following account:
"There can be no biography of him. Facts are few, stories many. He seems to have been known by different names in many parts of India, appearing and disappearing through the years. His non-Indian devotees of recent years knew him as Neem Karoli Baba, but mostly as “Maharajji”. Just as he said, he was "nobody". He gave no discourses; the briefest, simplest stories were his teachings. Usually, he sat or lay on a wooden bench wrapped in a plaid blanket while a few devotees sat around him. Visitors came and went; they were given food, a few words, a nod, a pat on the head or back, and they were sent away. Sometimes he sat in silence, absorbed in another world to which we could not follow, but bliss and peace poured down on us. Who he was was no more than the experience of him, the nectar of his presence, the totality of his absence, enveloping us now like his plaid blanket."
Baba would say that attachment and ego are the greatest hindrances to the realisation of God and that “a learned man and a fool are alike as long as there is attachment and ego in the physical body.” He would advise people to surrender to God's will above everything else so that they might develop love and faith in him and thereby be free of unnecessary worries in life.

Spiritual Practice is just three things: Love, serve, and remember. Meditation is not something we do willfully; it is a state we enter into naturally over time through devotion. Meditate like Christ…He lost himself in love. It is not necessary to meet your guru on the physical plane. The guru is not external. Don’t think you are late in this life, every flower blooms in its own time. It is said that we cannot think of a saint, the saint has to plant that seed in us. We can't think of them, they think of us. The whole universe is our home and all residing in it belong to our family… instead of trying to see God in a particular appearance, it is better to see God in everything. See all women as mothers, serve them as your mother. When you see the entire world as the mother, the ego falls away. See everything as Mother and you will know God. A pure woman is better than a hundred yogis. Women are more open to love God. Even if a person hurts you, give them love. The worst punishment is to throw someone out of your heart… You should love everyone as God, and love each other. If you cannot love each other, you cannot achieve your goal. Forgiveness is the greatest weapon, because a saint so armed is unperturbable he can give up anger immediately. Whoever works for God, their work will be done by itself. Love is the strongest medicine. It is more powerful than electricity. Lust, Greed, Anger, Attachment - These are all paths to hell. Everywhere I look, all I see is God. That’s why I’m always honoring everything. The eyes of a saint are always concentrated on the supreme self. The minute they are aware of themself, sainthood is lost. All religions are the same. They all lead to God. God is everybody… If you want to see God, kill desires. Desires are in the mind. When you have a desire for something, don’t act on it and it will go away. When you have God, you don’t have any more desires. Cleanse the mirror of your heart, and you will see God. If you want to put fresh milk in a cup, you have to wash it first. Otherwise, the milk will turn sour. So, this path is a path of cleaning the cup of our own hearts, to hold the nectar of love. If you do not make it empty, how will you fill it up again? To see God, you must have special eyes. Otherwise, you cannot bear the shock I am everybody’s guru. I don’t want anything. I exist only to serve others. Once I take hold of your hand, I never let it go, even when you let go of mine.
