We do value the position that you've found yourself in, to be able to speak honestly and not be worried about upsetting bike shops or manufacturers unlike many tiddlers in the modern media like myself. You are my FAVORITE bike reviewer Mr. Neevesy sir. I live in Missouri, USA, and I immerse myself in your reviews riding all over the British Isles and Europe. I was fortunate enough to visit GB in 1978 spending 3 mos there studying (but mostly renting real Minis and driving all over England, Wales and Scotland). Then we took a 3 week trip to the Continent as far west as Vienna, south to Rome and west along the Mediterranean to Nice & up through Paris... a true highlight of my life!! Now at 66 I want to return to ride it all!!

Sir, you have an incredible gift of explaining, teaching and storytelling that leaves the viewer/listener wanting more. Thank you for sharing your gift and knowledge. Thanks for the very cool story . Hindsight tells me that the UK's age level limit motorcycle license is a sensible idea. Here in the states you could get your motorcycle license at 15.5 years old. No limits. My first road bike was a brand new 1973 Norton 850 commando. I survived somehow but used up a lot of our life's luck. Road testers like yourself were and are very important to those of us who only put family before motorcycles. Keep going on telling the real facts down to the smallest detail.

Excellent video Michael, thank you. I am only a few years older than you and I recognise every single issue you held up. One thing you mentioned was being intimidated by some of the names in the industry and I have a similar experience, though not quite intimidation and it does involve you, on a small level. I have been living in the Czech Republic for quite a while and ended up doing some work with local online publications. Through this, long story short, I got to meet and know Kevin Ash. We sadly know what happened to him and I am still gutted to this day. I flew over from CZ to attend his funeral and remember seeing so many of my bike journo ‘heros’ there. Your good self included. There was a moment in the service where we were all asked if we wanted to say something, and on one hand I desperately wanted to, on the other I could not raise my voice, as I was too upset in the moment to speak, feeling not eloquent enough amongst his real colleagues. Similarly at the reception afterwards I wanted to talk with you all but felt that intimidation, and to some extent a little star struck, to be able to just walk up as a stranger. I came back over for the memorial ride around Silverstone that Caroline arranged, for Kevin, riding my Diavel from Prague and that evening I did get to meet Dan Harris. I remember recounting to him the first time that I had seen Kevin at EICMA from a distance but again had been a bit star struck and not spoken to him. It was the next year that we did and became friends. I remember someone in the group laughing a bit saying just how un star like, down to earth, Kevin was. This of course was true but until that point I had just been a bike fanatic all those years absorbing every word in the motorcycle press I could lay my hands on. Guys like Kevin, Trevor Franklin, Jon Urry, Simon Hargreaves, Alan Cathcart, Bertie Simmonds, Dan Harris, Roger Willis, John Robinson etc …. and Michael Neeves were stars to us. You were living our dream, you were the guys who brought this unreachable world to connect with ours on a Wednesday, or monthly, you guys did not move in our everyday circles. So yes, I get why that competition, which I also saw but did not enter, changed your life and I am absolutely delighted for you that it did. I am old enough now not to put anyone on a pedestal, we all just hold our phones in place with blu-tak sometimes, but I do appreciate what you have brought to us over the years and it is testament that you have evolved so well in to delivering useful content in the changing media world. Still relevant and the next generation of motorcyclists, in the form of my son over here in CZ, is lapping up all that he can see. Thanks

Hi Stephen, good to hear from you and thanks for your kind words. Kevin was a legend - I loved spending time with him on launches. Neevsey - you have a lot of fans and deservedly so. Why? I'm sure you've asked yourself the same question. Wouldn't even surprise me if you suffer a bit of 'imposter syndrome' as a lot of the greats have. Again why? Because you have 'it' and 'it' is something very few people have. You can't put your finger on it and nor can I, but heck it doesn't matter because you have 'it'. Call it charisma, honesty, sincerity, emotional appeal, logos, ethos, pathos etc etc. Call it what you want, you have our ears and that my friend (as I would be blessed to call you) is a rare gift. You simply have 'it'. I am a massive fan and if I want the lowdown on a bike, you are my reference point. Many thanks!!!!!

Neevesy - it's great to hear you speak well of other bike testers (44 Teeth, Visordown, etc.). At the end of the day, motorcycle riders love riding bikes, but also love the community aspect. There's nothing I love more than listening to your review of a bike and then comparing it with the verdicts of some of the other testers. It's great to hear different perspectives. There's seldom a bike that just does everything right, and if it did it would probably lack character. I hate that my CBR600RR has very little torque down low (stock gearing!), but I LOVE that it comes alive about 10 grand! I don't know about other viewers, but I'd love to watch to a video of you speaking with other testers about past tests. The banter, the tension, the pressure from manufactures, the missed ferries, the accidents, etc. I also think bike shootouts should move away from an overall 1st, 2nd, 3rd ranking (although, that is part of the excitement) and instead go with a ranking based on use case relative to the bikes category (e.g., two or more of: Track, Fast Road, Road Trip, Commute, Learner). The 'Overall' winner can be the one testers choose to ride home or buy. I think this is steadily happening more and more among testers as there really isn't such a thing as a bad bike. To be frank - as a consumer - if bike testing wasn't a profession, I wouldn't get excited about new bikes. There's nothing more boring than watching a manufacturer talk up their own bike launch. You don't trust it. You don't watch it. It's not 'real'. Whereas, watching a review or shootout can quickly plant the seed in your mind that it's time for a different/new bike. Glad you won that competition and took the pay cut. No easy decision, but you followed your passion and the world of biking is far far better for it!

I met Neevesy in Arizona (ironically at a gorgeous track that had no proper planning permission) for his first CBR1000RR test, I was working in America at the time. They always kept US and UK journo’s apart but there was always a crossover evening where we ‘bumped’ into each country. He came across as a thoroughly decent guy and I believe he’s gone from strength to strength without any ego. Top man.

I remember the MCN competition! I think they advert jokingly/seriously said they wanted someone who could slide the rear wheel and the front wheel, at the same time! Looked like a dream job. When they revealed it was you and why, it looked like a good and fair decision. And you quickly turned into an excellent test rider and reviewer. Good reviewers are so important. Otherwise we waste our time trying bikes we don't like (K Z1000, too softly sprung and bouncy at the front), or missing out on some we might like such as the Yamaha MT 1,700cc twin which is actually fun, and the 250cc Virago which is perfect on Spanish island holidays. Maybe the Z1000 was setup wrong, it's possible. I once had a vfr750/800 for a week. When it turned up I tried to go round a roundabout but it wanted to go straight on. Turns out the suspension was set all wonky. I put it back to what the settings are in the manual and it cornered predictably. I digress. You don't, that's why you're reviewing! :-)

What a great story Neevesy, thanks! I’ve loved bikes since I was a kid and started riding at 16 (I’m now 58). When I was about 19 I, like you, decided it would be good to get paid for riding bikes. I became a bike courier, and I lasted about 2 weeks before I realised it was the worst job I could ever do and it was fast ruining my love of all things 2 wheeled! With waterproofs that weren’t (no Goretex back then, or if there was I’d never heard of it and couldn’t have afforded it anyway) and falling off near Tower Bridge, I’d had enough and quit. Since then I’ve loved bikes again and have been lucky to have owned a fair few decent ones, done track days, passed an advanced test and toured with mates and it’s been a blast, even though it’s been funded by ‘proper’ (read dull!) jobs. I look forward to the next instalments!

What no one knows is that the idea to pick a random rider to be trained up as a racer was first offered to me, but I had just started a new job (after being unemplyed for 6 months) and couldn't make the time commitment.

I'd love to see a road test revisited series. Looking back to 999s and k5s. It'd be great to hear your views now compared to then 😁

20years summed up in 25minutes! Well done Neevesy ! Been Brilliant following your journey as we are a similar age and from the same part of Kent! Please share with us some of the road test stories from the past and keep up the great work Mate👍👌

I remember following this process at the time as I'd previously met you when my brother Darren introduced us at the Manston roundabouts where everyone went to practice their knee-downs. You had a go on my R1 and wheelied it between the roundabouts...I'm sure you won't remember it but it's one of biking "claims to fame"🤣Keep up the great work Michael, always great to read👍😁

Good listen. More power to you, mate. I used to buy MCN before I'd even got my license! It's worth mentioning that, as the print media is fading away, the video content from you and from MCN has taken a massive step up in quality over the last few years. All the videos with tips on set up etc., the long term test bikes, really good stuff. Keep it up!

Blimey, I was a weekly buyer of MCN back then having got back onto bike in 2000 after 15 years off bikes and remember the competition for the new road tester, in fact I nearly applied myself 🤣, so great you won it but most importantly are still there doing it. All the names mentioned also bring back great memories. Long may you continue with MCN.
