at 14:42 one addition to this point, on most Leofoto tripods the top is of the "systematic" design, so the plate is secured to this head first, off the tripod, using an Allen key then the systematic plate is secured onto the tripods spider; thereafter the only movement is by taking off the systematic head from the spider, the connection to the head isn't disturbed, unless for head maintenance.

A very thoughtful and detailed comparison...thank you! Have you seen the Acratech 41112 Leveling Base? It's quite robust, and has a far better control knob than either of the ones shown in your review.. See specs below..

I agree with your comments. I bought the Leofoto version a while back and I found it to be extremely stiff, the bubble level was a joke and the locking lever left a lot to be desired. I sold it and bought the Acratech version....night and day difference. As with all photo gear...you get what you pay for.

Thanks for the review. I've had the Neewer for most part of a year and noticed as well just how stiff it was to get into position. Over the last year this has progressively gotten worst until now it is just fully locked and 100% unusable. Interesting your points on the lever lock of the Neewer vs the sleeve lock of the Leofoto, I have actually been wondering if it was this lever lock somehow putting too much pressure on one side of the levelling bowl that has caused damage to it? Wondering if the sleeve design of the Leofoto might be better if it is uniformly putting pressure on the levelling bowl to lock it in place? Going to find out anyway as I can't afford one of those Ranger tripods and I won't be getting another Neewer.

The wider foot and screw position of the newer version looks like it’ll work and fit great for levelling the skywatcher az gti Astro tracking head and with the size and weight of the head will prob help with how stiff the ball is to get level 👍

one other option, to go with the Leofoto tripods which have the systematic top (LM/LN series eg: 404C ), and go with the leveling bowl adaptor (75 or 100mm) and add a leveling bowl to that, with the arca Swiss style clamp incorporated, thus giving strength (75% of spider diameter) and the ease of use {like cinema users have, the knob down below, which screws onto a stud going to the leveling bowl}, btw the LARGER knob of the Leofoto is better, as you can grip it easier, as its bigger, and you use a coarse motion, not a delicate fiddly one, with your wrist, not your finger tips!!, so would be easier with gloves on.

I bought the Leophoto leveling base and discovered that it did not work well on my tripod because it would unscrew from the tripod when I was trying to loosen it. I came to the same conclusion that it was better to buy a new tripod with the leveling base included. I purchased the LS-284CEX to use with my pan and tilt head (actually a fluid head) and I am very happy with it. I use a Leophoto ball head now on my old tripod with no leveling base as a second tripod when I shoot with to cameras. The original leveling base is just sitting on shelf collecting dust.

Excellent, thorough review. I actually have the Oben base which is identical to the Neewer. I think this same base is sold under several names. It is a nice levelling base and I agree with you about the stiffness. I'm using it on a Feisol 3401, but I am going to order the Leofoto 284CEX and replace the whole thing.

Thanks for a great review on both leveling devices. After watching this review, I went with the Leofoto LB60N. I use this with a rifle and not a camera and it works great. You can remove the set screw on the base and add a thumb lever in it's place if needed.

I think this twist mechanics of the Leofoto is just superior to this flimsy ratching thing you seem to be used to. I don't know why a lot of producers still make these mechanisms? On the Leofoto you can use your whole hand while on the Neewer you normally use two fingers. 🤔(Even the in my eyes superior Novoflex Leveling Base - MagicBalance 20 - has this flimsy thing like the Neewer.)

After hours and hours of product research I almost went with the Leofoto Ranger series. If you're looking for products built to a standard, a 75mm systemic tripod from Leofoto like the Summit series with the Leofoto LB-75 ball or flat leveling base is nearly equivalent to the Ranger. In my opinion the loss of a bit of compactness in the apex but gain serviceability and interchangeability is worth it. You can even later purchase a center column for the Summit series if you find you'd like one. You can't do that with the Ranger.
@georgedavall9449
@georgedavall9449 4 ай бұрын
Confusing comment, juss sayin? The Summit series with the systematic system base is above the Ranger series. The Ranger series are very good sticks. And, they offer several sizes of ‘bolt on’ center columns for the Ranger tripods. Not as elegant or effective as the columns for the others, but it works, in a pinch. Deal with ‘Hudson Henry’ or Leofoto USA direct! Peace

Ls-284cex, the leveling has both combined
@Mepjc
@Mepjc 2 жыл бұрын
I would have loved either a 284 or 324CEX, but the cost was prohibitively expensive in the UK - in the end I got the 324C + LH40 head for £319; the equivalent package for the 324CEX would have been £600!! I also wasn't overly convinced of Leofoto's guarantee and wanted tripod legs with the least amount of moving bits possible; very easy to replace a removeable levelling base if it goes wrong and you could have at least a couple of good ones for the difference in price between the 324C and CEX.

Like with some other Leofoto products, their leveling base is a ripoff of an RRS design but they cheapened out their knockoff version. Whereas the RRS has three lobes for tightening, the Leofoto has only two and combined with the subpar machining, it lacks a precise and proper ergonomic feel. Go with a USA-made Acratech.

If you put a ball head on a leveling base, you just defeated the reason for getting a leveling base. Now you have to level the ball head, after you leveled the leveling base. One or the other, not both. I like the tightening mechanism on the Leofoto better, and the lighter pressure. Everybody has their preference. Not enough difference in price. Good video, but a panning base is all you need on a leveling base. Those two would always be used together. Now, you Could use a leveling base on TOP of a ball head, but not the other way round. That's too much stuff, though. Also, you could just put a ball head on the tripod, then a panning base on the ball head. You would have more adjustability than the leveling base. Just some thoughts. Good review.

That is incorrect Chezler. To make a panorama and the camera is not completely straight, you need to level, then level the ball joint (but you can put the camera upside down for example, it doesn't need to be at 90 degrees).

Says the bubble is not so accurate, says the pair of clamp levels are, but it doesn't occur to him to test the former with the latter by simple placing one atop the other. You don't "grab onto" the Leophoto levers, you just push on them, this nonsense about gloves in the cold is just dumb. The Leophoto tripods are not more compact because they lack a center column, this in fact makes them wider on top. This review is unlearned and worthless.
