Using the word “not” is the simplest explanation of how to negate a nominal sentence. In Arabic, there is more than one way to say “not” and we cover each one in this lesson, with a fun quiz at 09:15 .
First things first, you should be familiar with what a nominal sentence is. If not, you can check out our video explaining that.
• Mubtada & Khabar | Bas...
There are three ways to negate a nominal sentence in Arabic grammar:
1. Using the word ليس (laysa).
This is the most commonly used method. However, laysa has some rules it needs to follow when being used to negate a sentence.
2. Using the word ما النافية (ma)
This is a simple method, where the word ma is simply put in the beginning of the nominal sentence, before the subject. It is used to negate nominal sentences in which the subject is definite and unlike laysa it doesn’t have to follow rules regarding gender and number.
3. Using the word لا (la)
The word la literally means no. It can be used to negate nominal sentences in which the subject is indefinite, by being added to the beginning of the sentence before the subject or mubtada. And similar to ma, it doesn’t follow rules regarding number and gender. However, this isn’t a common form of negating nominal sentences.
