That's a great analysis! But this works only when you are sure to go straight. Most of race tracks or cycle path have narrow parts, 90° degrees turn or hairpins and you might loose the habillity to take those turns at high speeds. Things tou can still do with a 0deg rear. A balance of pros and cons as always!

Yeah you're right. With a high negative angle (-35º or more) u give up a lot of manoeuvrability in exchange for more efficient pumps at higher speeds. Also, the minimum speed required to pump effectively is higher (15kph at least), and the mongo pushing can be a little weird because the turning radius is too wide and this makes the setup overly stable. The best way I can describe this feeling is to imagine pushing your board on the rails of a train track. So this sort of setups are definitely much more pump centric. Lower negative angles between -10 to -20º can help make a shorter deck ride like a mid/long deck though! Doing this gets you the turning radius of a longer setup plus the benefits of having a shorter physical wheelbase to maximise power transfer to all 4 wheels. There will be more "drive" with a shorter deck + negative rear setup compared to a mid/long 0º setup with a similar turning radius. It's worth noting that the TTX turns almost like a -10º rear truck too. this is especially obvious when you lean the TTX left to right quickly in a Spherical config with no bushings. It's like you said, pros & cons to find that balance to suit your needs!

Great video, helped explain things well, thank you. One slight suggestion/criticism, it may have been better to always have the front of the deck on the same side of the screen for overhead views. eg: 2:21 front = right, 2:55 front = right, 2:58 front = left, 3:09 front = left, 3:19 front = right I know you always labelled it, but the swapping back and forth made it feel less consistent.

Noted on this! The track is directional but I’m a goofy rider so naturally the stationary angle will be opposite of the track’s videos. But no excuses for the 2 decks side by side! Unfortunately I won’t be able to fix this direction issue on this track vs stationary unless I learn to ride switch 😂

Which setup would you recommend for the first pumping board? I only have experience with double drop pushing boards so far, but I would prefer a medium length deck because of the higher max. speed and space for the feet. What are the disadvantages of negative angel trucks or torsion tails? Is the adjustability of a gbomb class drop better for a beginner to find out the own preferences or should you start with standard angles and integrated trucks? Or should you even start with a non bracket board like the supersonic? As someone with snowboarding/surfing experience I'm pretty sure I would love pumping, so I would want to go for a setup that I can enjoy for a long time.

I would totally recommend integrated bracket configurations for your first setup because they’re well optimised when paired as a set (try to avoid mixing brands). Medium length platforms are easier to work with generally but with negative angles, shorter decks tend to be faster for sprints. Negative angle trucks benefit from higher speed efficiency as the rear angle goes up, but give up manoeuvrability for the straight line efficiency. Technically, the negative rear angle can even be the same as the front angle for insane straight line efficiency, if your fitness can keep up with it (this is tested and is insanely tiring but super fast). When it comes to tuning for negative angle configurations, the bushing effects are “shared” between the front and the rear. In other words, stiffening up either truck will affect the other directly. Torsion tails like the TTX when in torsion, steers negatively too. I estimate -5º to -10º effectively, but it depends on how the it is configured. The negative steering is especially obvious when you do a stationary wiggle on the spherical config with no bushings. Bushing tails like the S-tail don’t do this btw. But for simplicity sake, I would say it’s not far off from a 0º truck. Which have better manoeuvrability than negative angles (usually -20º to -35º is where the benefits of negative angle shows itself). The adjustability of adjustable brackets is a benefit, but I would say it’s less for beginners compared to integrated trucks. Personally I use adjustable brackets to learn more about how angles affect the setup. Nowadays I prefer the simplicity of integrated trucks because they’re usually better synergised and all I have to do is figure out the bushings. For split angle decks, they usually come with certain limits for tuning and I wouldn’t recommend it. These decks often perform best in their intended configuration. I’ve toyed around with several split angle decks and they’re difficult to tune because of the limitations of how wide the trucks need to be and limited wheel size options. They’re usually very prone to wheel bite because of these reasons. I hope I didn’t reply too late!

@SethOnWheels Wow, thanks for your comprehensive answer! The more I know about trucks, the more I tend to get integrated ones. Your reply confirms my feeling.

You look like a fishing lure. That’s why I like top mount pumping. Long fun pumps instead of , wiggle wiggle wiggle
@SethOnWheels
@SethOnWheels 2 күн бұрын
Actually the same theory of angles applies to top mount boards! The ones that I featured in this video are optimised for higher speed efficiency and require a slightly different technique to pump. Personally I found both methods to be fun in its own ways but ultimately I went with negative rear angles for the Asia Quarter Ultraskate for the added efficiency.
