I still find it unbelievable that the New Zealand government let this happen to children. A psychiatric facility that housed some of the country's most dangerous criminals as well as some very mentally ill people is no place for any child, no matter how badly behaved they were. My late husband was brought up in Marton, probably the closest small town to Lake Alice and, to hear his parents talk about it, you would think it was a lovely, caring place where the patients or inmates worked the gardens and farm and got a real sense of achievement being there. I was born in 1969 (not yesterday) and was brought up by an Austrian father who taught us that a healthy amount of skepticism was not a bad thing. My father-in-law has to be one of the most bigoted people I've had the misfortune to meet and these lovely stories were shot down in flames by my healthy amount of skepticism and a lot of reading and research I had done on the topic of these state run hospitals. The fact that Jack Drake never faced criminal charges when he had been been doing "this" since at least the 1970s is an indictment on our criminal justice system. This is a phenomenal podcast. Much love and respect to the people who are willing to come forward to tell what happened to them. To Rangi and Tyrone much admiration for their ability to support others as they tell their stories.

I make all the nursing students who come to my unit listen to this. Why we still need to improve mental health system and remind nurses that we should be advocates for our vulnerable patients. I am so sorry rangi and Tyrone that you didn’t have proper advocates and carers

Thank you for making this i do hope alot more of our nation hears about this as it is important to learn. Our government is appalling and my heart goes out to the survivors that had to endure that and for how long it took for their voices to be heard.

Frikin horrendous..I thought 6 weeks as a 7yr old in Otaki Health Camp was traumatic, that was in 1957, comparably it was a cake walk. These poor kids. Tragic.

If it wasn’t for the male pedos and the religious crap it may have been more bearable. Never be ashamed to cry, you’re both safe now. Not your fault, shouldn’t have happened. They took you from struggling, abusive parents but those few criminals in almost each place ruined it for everyone. Not easy to be in such a large family in poverty. Your poor whaea. You are safe now guys 💙💙
