Solidarity to the union members. That seems very reasonable.

Absolutely wild that you spend thousands of dollars and your whole life training and you’re told you still don’t know enough so you don’t get to get payed. Ballet companies have gotten away with to much for too long.

They don’t say that you don’t know enough. They just don’t wanna pay you that’s all.

That's why in Europe, most wages are paid by the government.

Solidarity from this union worker. We ALL deserve good working conditions and a fair contract!

Why are they being so cheap and mean. Dancers work sooo hard & have relatively short careers. Hope they can reach an agreement asap

interesting, thank you for bringing this to our attention. i can’t imagine lowballing dancers who spend their entire life-perfecting their craft….like they bring the art to life lol… wild.

In the last two seasons it became noticeable to me that a large number of dancers on stage, particularly in story ballets, were students from the school, filling the roles of peasants, aristocrats, swans, fairies, sylphs, etc. I felt like I was watching a student performance and thought myself cheated for paying over $200 per ticket. Granted these young dancers were very talented and danced on par with the regular company members. But this practice is unfair both to the paying audiences who expect to see fully trained professional dancers as well as to the students who allegedly perform for free.

Man do I dislike unions. If you don't like the pay, do something else. You're not forced to work there!

Unions are why a majority of people are even able to have a wekkend, or at least two days off from a job.

Yeah, the highly trained, relatively impoverished, extremely specialized dancers can just go to the ballet company across the street and get a better wage there. Or maybe it would be better for the theater to only employ dancers who can afford to dance for free because they’re independently wealthy… seems like a recipe for nepo-babies to push everyone else out of the field. Do you enjoy class mobility? We aren’t talking about the UAW, here. This is probably a single shop fighting for a living wage from a corporation (501c3 tax deductible?) that can probably afford to pay it.

@@benejack666 This is simply false. Unions didn't invent weekends or time off. Private companies offered this first. All kinds of benefits exist today in non-union shops.

@@sharkbelly1169 You don't get to do what you want and set your wage as well. The market sets your wage. If audiences are unwilling to pay, there's no ballet. You think it's the theater company, but it's ultimately the market that decides. It's great you point out these corporations are non-profits.
