Negros student finds new way to remove organic pollutants in water

Marian Ledesma of Negros Occidental National Science High School is concerned about protecting life in bodies of water which are often threatened by pollution. She studied the potential of EDTA-mGO, a magnetic nanoadsorbent from graphite, in removing organic pollutants from water and making the adsorbent easily retrievable after use.
Marian's research which may have potential use in improving water purification systems won her the top award in the Physical Science Individual Category of the Department of Education's 2020 National Science and Technology Fair. Her work was also one of the Philippines' six entries to 2020 International Science and Engineering Fair. She was mentored by Ms. Glaizelle Leonoras.
For her excellence in science research, Marian was among the 12 recipients of the 2020 Gokongwei Brothers Foundation Young Scientist Award. The GBF YSA recognition comes with a STEM college scholarship grant.
