That kidney guy really knows what life is all about. God bless him. The Manhattan bridge guy is what American labor used to be about but is slowly and surely losing. The fact that he has a good attitude about the changes around him shows his maturity and wisdom in a very graceful way. This episode is a masterpiece.

I'm staying in Lawrenceville at a temporary rental because the rents in Pittsburgh are too expensive. I heard in the past that Pittsburgh was a blue-collar or working class city, but the transformation that it's going through make it more like a hipster Portland--Ore or high tech Seattle (which is sad). When I came to the Northeast I was hoping to leave the hipster-high-tech vibe behind...but it looks like it made its way to Pittsburgh, including the insane rent. The sad thing is I'm seeing your video three years after it was produced. I enjoy watching your videos because you infuse them with empathy for the common person. You listen to the stories people tell you. And the photography is intriguing. It's how I'm learning about Pittsburgh.

Lawrenceville is broken down into 3 sections. 9th ward, 10th ward, and 6th ward. The hipsters changed it to lower and upper to hide lawrencevilles working class past. It's not the changes that bother the old residents. It's that the changes are pushing them out of their multi generation homes.

As a young teen growing up between Lawrenceville and Bloomfield in the 1950's, I remember the steel mills going strong. Prices were such that if a guy working in the mill brought a paycheck home with 75.00.....he could pay the rent, buy a week's groceries and have enough for a case of beer. Taxes were low and streetcars cost a dime. A Sunday streetcar all day, let one ride all around the city to see other neighborhoods....cost.....35 cents. The corp. tax paid for a lot of things then....we had a free zoo...a free museum....and a ticket to watch the Pirates was about a buck. Our summers were full of adventures.

Thanks pal ! I remember the first time I went to Pittsburgh in 1967 , before the steel mills were all shut down . I fell in love with this unique city , and I've been everywhere in the country ! Pittsburgh is almost like the city you could make if you could magically add all the elements necessary for human life , rivers ,hills , trees , beautiful scenic views , scary hills ( in the Winter ) and tiny roads that traverse almost impossible realms ! The cliffs , the valleys below and "hey , what's this , a bridge!" But Pittsburgh also has a regional feel as well . Although , Greater Pittsburgh is broken down into separate communities that are sometimes hidden in a valley somewhere , everything is connected ! I remember the color coded blue , orange , red , etc belt roads, which were very cool ! A journey waiting to happen ! I wish you every success in documenting a great American City ! Maybe THE great American City !

I grew up in Pittsburgh (born in Lawrenceville!) & got the hell out as soon as i was old enough - back in the 90s. The place still makes me crazy whenever i go home to visit ... but your series does an amazing job exposing me to parts of town I never got to know, and reminding me of just how fascinating & insane Pittsburgh really is! It's totally bonkers & totally amazing at the same time. I will never live there again, but as I've gotten older I have started to understand why so many people stick around. Aw that’s my street :) Lived here 9yrs now, when we bought there was 5 abandoned houses on the block. Now those houses been flipped, last one sold for 425k. It’s just been surreal. Saw an empty lot across the street got bought, new construction, and that sold 2yrs ago for 500k! I like our spot, cause it’s easy to get downtown, easy to get to the river trail and cemetery for walking. I don’t shop at any of the boutiques. My neighbors lived here 35 yrs, super nice folks. Used to only be a few kids on the block, now there’s a bunch and they play together out the alleyway. I think there’s different types of ppl. The daytime crowd 9-5 M-F, you got working class to upper class, artists, yinzers, the Uber folks grabbing lunch. Weeknights and weekends, you get more folks from outside the neighborhood. They occasionally leave cigarette butts in my flower pots out front, and they park illegally, but they gone during the day. I’m inside in the evenings it doesn’t bother me. During the daytime it’s quiet and we k ow all the neighbors and their dogs names. We all different and we find a way to live together.

On top of the waves of nostalgia (lived in pitt for 4 years during my undergrad at cmu), your videos truly give me a desire to go back and explore the nooks and crannies of the city that you've meticulously captured on this series! You should definitely do one of East Liberty/ Bakery Square, and focus on the history and gentrification of the area-- I lived in the Bakery Living Apartments a year ago, and I was ashamed and devastated to hear that the developers (Walnut Capital) have been tearing down schools and communities of color and bringing in unaffordable restaurants and shops. I'd love for you to shine a light on this issue

Wow, that was both sad and enjoyable for me to watch. A video about where Lawrenceville used to be. The video was really well done. My only complaint is "Upper, central, and lower Lawrenceville" part. It's 10th, 9th, and 6th Wards, but I guess that's part of it being gone. I spent the first 35 years of my life there until I had to move out about 5 or so years ago. My family lived there for 100 years. Sadly they are all dead and the only connection I had to them was that neighborhood. And there's really no other way to see it except that it was taken from me. It was a great place to grow up. Not anymore, though. Those people will step right over you if you were having a heart attack on the street. That is unless there's a camera recording and they can post online how great they are. In the 90s and early 2000s there was a major push for section 8 housing and they pushed way too fast and hard. Ironically by the same type of people that live there now. It destroyed the neighborhood. Property value plummeted and crime got really bad. I've been stabbed 3 separate times. Once property value was really low they pounced on it and turned it into what it is today. A soul-less shell of a neighborhood with a fancy exterior. It's not all bad, though. I was able to take the money I got from selling my family's home, got clean from heroin, get an advanced engineering degree, and I now lead research teams in the R&D department at a large company. The money wasn't much but it was at least 5 times more than it should've been and just enough for me to go to Pitt.

First of all, I'm a big fan Dean. Second, if you're looking for ideas beyond neighborhoods, I would really like to see something on those small islands in the Allegheny River (I think some of them are considered Allegheny Islands State Park). I've always wondered what is going on out there, but lack the time and transportation to explore them.
@nickliberto65834 жыл бұрын
Note to Jon: The island that can be observed as one crossing the 40th st. bridge from Lawrenceville toward Millvale, is now Washington Landing. Back in the day, it was Herr's Island. Had some meat packing companies....live stock that was rendered into food for the table. No real EPA rules back then. Some hot days in the summer would send some terrible odors throughout the area. Much of the offal was simply drained into the Allegheny River where catfish, carp and river rats competed for the mess floating on the water. Up river toward the Highland Park area, several islands were not developed other than one across from Oakmont. Many homes built on the island and some folks live there year round.

What a transformation this place has been through. When I lived in Pittsburgh back in the 90s, there was absolutely nothing going on in Lawrenceville. It was neither a bad neighborhood nor a destination neighborhood -- it was just sort of there and nobody who didn't live there paid any attention to it for any reason. What's Garfield like these days? Back then it was pretty rough but I can't imagine that's still the case today with gentrification coming at it from all sides.
