I mean yeah, you are right, plenty of otherwise healthy individuals _will_ parish in the fire, rodents and whatnot, but the overall populations will recover with vigor! These species evolved specifically to endure fire cycles. Some even use it to their advantage and live in fear of a green forest. It sounds downright savage, but that's nature; always has been, always will be.

WTF? I had to stay in a hotel for 3 days. There are hundreds of firefighters risking their lives, spending who knows how many man hours and resources. You should definitely have some idea---no place is safe from fire or some other natural disaster. I lived in the middle of the Rodney King riots, had to pack up the car b/c gas stations were being burned & they thought gasoline might be getting into the sewers (no homes were being directly attacked). It is a very interesting exercise to pack up your car. Everyone says "Pictures & documents" but those can mostly be replaced, esp. now that everyone has pictures on their phones or saved ona computer. So think about what is precious & irreplaceable to you & about what you might need for a while away from home---if one is left.

I keep all important papers in a waterproof ziplock bag under 2 magnets on the fridge. Grab n go. I lived in a high rise on the 6th floor once and a guy I story up and on the other side of the elevators from me started a kitchen fire. It spread fast and the sprinklers were flooding everything.

I use to be for capital punishment. Our justice system is a little too flawed to trust for the ultimate penalty. Over 130 death row inmates have been exonerated. Many more aren't being allowed to have their cases reexamined. Who knows how many innocent people have been executed. I'm still for it but the evidence had better be overwhelming to the point they were caught in the act.

I lost everything - my home and office and my neighborhood too - in a wildfire in 2007, started by 3 young men who thought it was fine to kick a still-glowing fire log into the brush when they were done with their party. It's something you recover from, yes, but life will never be the same. Sometimes, I still have to stop to think, "Now, do I still own (that item) or did I lose it in the fire?" All these years later! And the firemen who are impacted and all the animals, it's AWFUL! And worst is the enormous amount of time it takes to put one's life back together. I remember looking at my then-15-year old daughter. We each "owned" half a suitcase. We didn't own toothbrushes, clean underwear, or even shampoo. It was just insanity. IF you can help victims directly - cards, money, appliances, etc. - please do it.
