Neighbors rescue a Raccoon sentenced to death by hanging

To all the morons that are quick to judge and think I set this up or why didn’t I get scissors or why my knife sucks here are the answers. Not sure how or why it was wrapped up? I wasn’t close to my apartment to grab anything else, I only had the small cheap knife attached to my car keys. It wasn’t my car or cover so I didn’t know how the owner would react. I live connected to a metro park so I deal with raccoons a lot. He was fine after a while and went back into the woods. Rabies are very rare in our area, I’m not saying it couldn’t happen but this raccoon DID NOT have rabies. Everything turned out great and you guys got a front row seat to an amazing rescue. I also didn’t know the dude that stepped in to actually save the raccoon at the time which made it kinda awkward because I was recording it. So chill the fuck out! Oh yeah plus I was already recording Pryor to the fact and it was filmed on my iPhone for all the ass hats that think I had some camera equipment. Dammit 🤦‍♂️

he likely died not long after you can tell he has neurological damage with the circling he keeps doing. being asphyxiated for that long most definitely made permanent damage and if they didnt get him to a vet he sadly and probably didnt make it

that is my experience at least with volunteering in animal saving. we have had birds going into windows and circling around on the ground afterwards or birds getting caugh with ropes/net around their body and necks and asphyxiating and we loosen them and try saving them but they still died after. they would go in circles for a while and we could not take them to a vet (because we are mostly simple volunteers and do not have any funds) and they didnt survive. my experience is mostly with cats and birds and not raccoons so i hope it went well with it and that i am wrong in his case but i have low expectations💔

As someone who volunteers with a wildlife rescue up in Canada, I thank you for your compassion to help this beautiful creature. I was very happy to see that you went and grabbed some gloves to protect yourself, as your safety needs to come first. Fyi, sometimes the circling is signed of distemper, I hope not for this wee guy and the area community. I loved your other video, the rescue in the dumpster of the 7-8 baby raccoons. Raccoons are very clever and curious animals and keeping them out of enclosures, or in our case in enclosures is very tricky. A double locking system, like the addition of a carabineer used in rock climbing, we've found to be useful. Also having a roof that they can't lift off is very important as they can climb anything. in this guys case. He got stuck and who knows how long he was stuck there till the video started. But i was like that for 7 minutes of the video, being strangled. Prolonged periods of being without air causes the brain to die. A little boy next city from me fell in a connal a couple years ago, he was submerged for 10 or more minutes and he was pulled out alive, but because of how long the brain went without air, he was unresponsive from then on. The poor raccoon suffered secere brain damage because he was being hung by the neck for far to long. He likely does not have rabies, the raccoon basicaly gave up fighting to live before the guy started filming.

I worked as a vet assistant as well as for wildlife rescue. To everyone claiming to know the Raccoon suffered brain damage - during the few minutes the raccoon was taped after being freed there wasn't enough time to remotely recover. This animal just went through a period of restricted breathing and was exposed to immense stress. It's a wild animal with escape reflex, it doesn't lay down to relax and catch some air as a human would do. As soon a wild animal is back on its feet it has the instinct to move on. So it's very possible the raccoon really just still felt dizzy and disoriented. Before brain damage occurs usually all mammals fall unconscious. Not always, but in most cases. Also the video doesn't tell if the raccoon was unconscious at any point before they discovered it. Brain damage can only be diagnosed if the state of going in circles doesn't pass for hours, this video shows solely a FEW MINUTES after. Give it time. Just read a lot of comments of people who say "I'm not a vet, but know for sure it suffered brain damage." You CAN'T KNOW after watching this video. I'm working in the field and am very experienced and can't make a diagnosis by what I see. So please don't make your unqualified assumptions a fact.

I own a rescue dog, she was trapped in a place where she couldn't breathe. She ended blind and walked in circles for a few years. My guess is the raccoons brain wasnt getting enough oxygen, leading to the walking in circles.

Yes, sadly that walking in circles is an unmistakable sign of irreparable neurological damage -- likely caused by asphyxiation. I doubt it was rabies, as someone posted earlier, as there's not a hope in hell it would tolerate being handled -- exhausted or not.

My dog got himself tangled up by the neck on a rope one night and when we found him basically hung by the heck in the morning, he was so oxygen-deprived from that night, it looked like he had given up. He couldn't see or hear us, walked in circles, often stumbling around and bumping into things, when he got tired he would collapse on the ground and we had to lead him to drink and eat. Seems like this raccoon suffered some brain damage from being ties up like that :( so sad
