I had one years ago that stormed round from next door every time I used a leaf blower demanding I either turn it off or ‘put it on quiet mode’. I simply said “f**k off it hasn’t got one.” and he didn’t bother me again. Thought it would escalate but didn’t 🤷🏼‍♂️ Following season asked me to do his garden, I went to see him turns out he was a psychotherapist working from home and his clients needed quiet. We set up a system where I only used machinery in between clients. Weirdly it worked, did the garden, well paid until he moved 3 years later. He never mentioned my bad language 😅

Rarely work Saturdays now , but generally I start about 9 , because of the very reason you mentioned irate neighbours, twitching curtains etc , and some fencing jobs over the years have been bad especially with neighbour disputes and boundary lines and like you say some have asked me to do work for them , no too busy bye 😀

We had similar experience with a guy we started cutting a hedge neighbor comes storming out saying I work nights you can’t cut that hedge now 😩 we said unfortunately we can’t cut the hedge at night and advised him to get some ear plugs

Whilst working with a tree surgeon I had a charming man telling us to stop working as his wife works Nightshift and was trying to sleep. It was maybe around 10am, but there is a fine line between knowing that you are doing nothing wrong but aware that it's yours or someone else's company name on the van.

You've got to do what you think is right and being amenable to those around is not a problem, like you say your name can be on the line. What is a problem is how people approach you with their issues. I'm always happy to adjust what I do or how I do things when asked but the old shouting gets nothing after a while😬

I've had my fair share of hedge politics over the years! I remember one job I had where a lady came out to have a go about the noise of my then petrol hedge trimmer so I said I'll put it on the "quiet setting" and she left 😂👍🏻

I had one this year f’ing and jeffing at me over the fence……. As I always say we can’t please everyone.. if ever I get someone having a go I just get really relaxed and stay mellow .. obviously it’s our business at stake so not worth nutting someone..🤔..I had a bloke come marching over years ago moaning about our machines as he worked nights .. it was afternoon time and I was nowhere near his flat …. Obviously with the battery stuff now it’s probably not so deafening…. Keep Calm and Carry On …👍

I think I'd have reacted one of two ways. Got annoyed or laughed before I politely declined. It goes to show how oblivious some people can be all the same. There's no way I'd do it. I think some people think gardeners are desperate. It's a bit satisfying to help them come to the realisation that we aren't...for me anyways...

Cutting back conifers in a garden and neighbour comes out saying she's going to set her dogs on me if I carry on. I asked her if they could get past the chainsaw and if they could, good on them. She was an ex-prison warden with two Alsatian dogs. She kept on rattling on about shite for hrs while I trimmed and took out the dead conifers. I later find out, no one likes her . I understand why. Years later, she asked me to clear her garden as she was selling the house. NAH thanks.

Regular moaning neighbour shouted at me to stop on a Saturday afternoon using an hla65 battery hedge cutter. You can't be serious I said but I stopped.... Then I went back with my chainsaw the next Thursday. Husband subsequently asked about service to which I replied I'm full. Rude annoying clients, never jamais nunca.

Threatening a bloke with a hedge trimmer ain't that smart...its basically a medieval 👿weapon running or not. Visited the local hedge from hell last weekend. 8 foot and well kept on one side and 15 foot of seathing anger and hatred on the other. The local MP has been involved in this dispute for about 8 years apparently. Made a mental note never to do any work for numbers eleven to seventeen on that street having met one of the residents.

Have you got any clients that are regularly rude/a bit mental? My first regular I took on (still with her currently....) Will say one thing and swear blind she didn't. She will launch into full on attacks at anything she thinks is slightly off, even if I've informed her beforehand of how I'm going to be doing something. I get regular messages from her having a go at me for doing things she has specifically asked me to do. Would you bin her off? Since she was my first client, I only charge her £17 an hour and she gets absolutely everything done and still then moans at the price as well... Mental

My all time favourite was my old next door neighbour, they had some family get together and one of the cars was partly parked over my drive. So couldn’t get the van off the drive, anyway I knock politely ask them to move it all is nice and dandy until I get back from the shop with my beers and the wife’s wine. We’re sitting in the garden enjoying the above said beverages and all we can hear is who f#*k does he think he is etc etc. couple of months down the line the guys fitting his own kitchen got it all done and goes to plumb in his washing machine doesn’t nip the union up on his washing machine valve and has water pissing out everywhere instead of turning the stop cock off he’s knocking on my front door like a man possessed. I go round sort it in 5mins make him look like a tit in front of his wife and leave him with his tail between his legs mopping his kitchen floor and told him this one’s on me😂😉
