The narrator has no idea...he coached the mighty Norwood football club to 2 premierships in 82 & the history makers in 84, the first side to win a flag from 5th. He later coached the Eagles in the SANFL.

I don't know who researched this but they are hopeless. Neil Balme coached Norwood not Glenelg in the SANFL for around 10 years to two premierships. He played for Norwood when he first got there and no one was safe, big or small. Neil was the master of going for the spoil and missing the ball and smacking the opponent in the face. Just ask Kerley. He'd left Norwood to play for North I think and Neil made him pay. Off the field, Neil was a lovely guy and has made an huge contribution since his playing days. David MacKay remembers him fondly from that Grand Final when he played most of the game with a broken jaw courtesy of Neil and still took one of the great marks.

Footy thugs are a bit like serial killers...never knock each other off, just whack the good ball players

@Melthoid Serendipity no such thing nowadays, just look at a player wrong or squirt some water on their head and you get 3 weeks. This was old school WAR footy that made it famous. No holds barred pure adrenaline ridden masculinity at its peak.

@@lukeslayer In other words, this was crappy, toxic "masculinity" with no sense of fighting face-on. Balme was a coward and a psycho.

@billwhite9703 Mate if you're scared to throw hands just say it. These blokes went out to war on that footy field week in and out on piss poor pay for the love of the battle. If your testosterone tells you otherwise good for you darling.

He coached Norwood in the SANFL. He even won a premiership. If you want an ex-Victorian who coached Glenelg, what about John Nichols.

Neil Balm would have beaten anyone toe to toe. If you watch carefully you will notice no one has the guts to fight him after he wacked those people. Easily the toughest man in the 70s in the VFL

He should always be remembered as the thug who knocked out Geoff Southby in that Grand Final. Southby's career never record. Balme should always be remembered as a thug, just like Leigh Matthews. No hero.
