2006 Neil deGrasse Tyson closes the three day lecture series with an excellent final "sermon" on cosmic perspective and the impact of science. Notice Dawkins in the audience.

I'm 55 and I'm inspired. Neil is brilliant, he knows how to communicate, he is passionate about his realm of expertise, he is a true educator. And he's effing cool too. For the people who say he is arrogant, well, I think that's your inferiority complex talking. And yes, he probably is smarter than you, and I'm sorry you feel threatened by that. He's definitely smarter than me, and I thank the Universe for that, because if I was the smartest person in the world, we would be all doomed.

this guy always makes me smile, with his childlike sense of wonder, his wish to share that feeling of wonder with his students, wether they be in a classrom, a lecture hall, or those on the other side of a television screen. I wonder how many people he's inspired to become scientists? Or even just how many he's shared his wonder with, who are touched, even a little bit, by his joy in KNOWING things ? Well, imo, the world is better for his presence, that's for sure! Thank you, Dr. Degrasse-Tyson 😃 May peace and happiness be unto all of us

Then I'll happily explain to him how the atoms making up the wallet he's taking were formed in the cores of high-mass stars as they destabilized at the ends of their lives prior to exploding in supernovae which redistributed the atoms throughout the local area of space, allowing for the formation of stars, planets, life, and wallets (our sun, of course, itself being a third-generation star in the Milky Way galaxy), only so he can properly appreciate the significance of this wallet . . . Hey, where'd you go? Come back -- do you want the wallet or not?! Or maybe it wouldn't work out that way.

"Then I realized, the problem was, his ego was too large to begin with." Religion is not better than Science. Science is not better than Religion. To believe, unquestioningly and totally, in either statement is to be a disgrace as a religious or scientific person. Whether you are one or both.
@playd76
@playd76 10 жыл бұрын
Dapperfex "Religion is not better than Science. Science is not better than Religion. " I totally disagree with that statement. Look at the benefits of science compared to the benefits of religion (of which i know of none). Does religion have the ability to cure the sick? Some may claim so but we know better. Does religion advance he human race? No, it holds us back. Does religion have the ability to save the human species from extinction? No, it might in fact lead to our extinction. Do you see where I'm coming from? Religion is merely the pathetic leftovers from man's ignorant past & the sooner we rid ourselves from its shackles, the sooner we will know peace. Hell, if it wasn't for religion we'd have probably cured all known disease, & colonised Mars by now so I'm sorry, but science is CLEARLY 'better' than religion in every sense.

The term "sermon" here is used in analogy, not to be taken literal guys. It's scary that some people here think it is a "sermon" because it reduces the ideals of science and science literacy to something that should be preached, which lowers it's true value and place. There is no preaching of science, only the teaching of it.

I am aspiring to be a scientist because I love science. I would like to share an experience that highlights why. I visited the grand canyon several months ago. i was awestruck at its beauty. While hiking with my father we came along a geologymeuseum that outlined the entire history. I read the whole thing. Scientology has nothing to do with science any more than... anything else. Its the belief in a story about aliens sowing human seeds on earth on incredibly specifically described spaceships. Just because it has ties to space, doesnt mean it has anything to do with science. Space is a setting. You could argue that christianity is based on science since it has a guy who was made of atoms and was born under a super bright star. 'Scientology' is a misnomer. And its designed to persuade people to think 'well this is to do with science, so it must be smart and therefore correct' Everything is science really. Scientology is just a misleading name. Christianity is named after christ. But that could be called scientology too, because science applies to everything anyway.

Supposedly Jesus, and Buddha, and Lao Tzu, and Confucious, and Mohammed, and Krishna, and many I can't remember or don't know of, were real people whose words could inspire people, and explode their awareness, and self-awareness with their words. They preached what they figured out with what little data they had, in the world of their time. Sadly their crappy data and social mindset had gods and other artifacts of ignorance and empty pride. Neil just may the the "prophet" of this day, speaking messages that are just as profound, and yet his sermons come from vastly superior data and superior processes (we've learned alot as a species). This man will inspire thousands, even millions over the years, to yearn for the stars. If that isn't real change, I don't know what is. When this guy dies, I bet there'll be a church of NDeTysonism within a decade, and that just might be a church worth joining: It will have no god, no prayer, no pointless ceremonies, and its tithes will go toward space research and science education. The creeds will be to advance & organize & archive & preserve scientific knowledge, to use the beauty of the cosmos as inspiration for artistic expression, and to eternally seek physical truth and self-correction through scientific methods.

God cannot exist... If you have a being who created the universe and all the "laws of nature" and behaviour of particles and so on... That being cannot possibly be one that rewards blind faith and gullibility and requests only belief and "being good". It doesn't make any sense the greatest scientist in the universe being a petty, egomaniac, that cares who you sleep with and how, among other ridiculous rules. That is the most improbable scenario in the history of thinking and it's an insult to all thought from the big bang to the end of all existence. oh and btw ...what the hell is a god anyway?
@35snarf
@35snarf 9 жыл бұрын
Frandysworld How can you dismiss the existence of God because of his attributes, or what you think they are? That is a straw man argument, is it not? It has nothing to do with his actual existence. There is a very high probability that God exists. Fine-tuning, though not absolute proof of God, is exceptional evidence for a fine-tuner. For example, the odds of the universe existing according to the Cosmological constant is 1 part in 10^120. That's 1 part in a trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion. Other constants include the gravitational constant being 1 part in 10^40, the strong nuclear force being fine-tuned, and the electromagnetic force being fine-tuned. This is not an exhaustive list by any means. I'd say this is proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The only alternative to present against a _fine-tuner_ is multiple universes, for which there would need to be at least 10^120 in order for ours to exist. Secondly, the mechanism which drives the creation of these universes would need to be fine-tuned itself, in order to produce the right variation so that ours could come about. In the end, multiverses are quite speculative and untestable, and they still require fine-tuning. Using Occam's Razor, we can determine it is far more likely that a fine-tuner exists, i.e. God. With the odds of a fine-tuner being so incredibly high, why not be open to the very likely existence of God?
@Frandysworld
@Frandysworld 9 жыл бұрын
The universe being fine-tuned is an illusion as far as we know this is the only universe. The universe and the laws governing it are what they are. It's fine-tuned as opposed to what? Its like saying the earth has been fine tuned for us. We are from the earth we evolved there and we are part of it so of course it would appear that its fine tuned for us. The earth spawned us. The planet wouldn't produce something alien to it, or produce life that is made of or eats something that earth cannot provide. The fine tuner thing is a biased theory that only comes to the already indoctrinated mind. If you look at things objectively, the universe does not require a god. by the way, you say i dismiss gods for their attributes i say you believe in them for the same reason. The only difference is you believe in it out of laziness to search for evidence that would contradict your ideas, and I'm looking at reality on reality's terms. Not only the christian god is BS, but it has no more evidence going for it (maybe even less) than other BS religions before it or beside it. So your theory is just faith. Belief for the sake of belief. Oh and PS please define what a god is before professing its existence.
@35snarf
@35snarf 9 жыл бұрын
Frandysworld "The universe being fine-tuned is an illusion as far as we know this is the only universe." By saying that, you are contradicting any cosmologist I've seen/heard. That is unscientific. Cosmologists will disagree with your assertion that the universe is the only one, because that would lead us with reasonable certainty to a fine-tuner, a God. So, they posit a multiverse. -The alternative is that our universe does not exist as it does, which is why I presented to you the cosmological constant. The alternative is at least 10^120 other possible ways our universe could have existed. You don't have to believe my figure, go research it. -Well, you are incorrect about a "biased theory," and I could equally say you've been indoctrinated. I'm simply a rationalist. Let me place this in perspective: Let's say I deal a poker game, and I deal myself 4 aces for 20 hands in a row. The odds of this happening are exceedingly rare, right? You can calculate this yourself, but it doesn't even compare to the odds of the cosmological constant guiding the formation of our universe, which is capable of life. So, what would you infer with my poker dealing? Would you keep playing and say, "Oh, well there's an incredibly slim chance that he's not cheating. But, it is still possible. So, I'll keep playing." We both know that is not true. You would assume, given the odds, that some intelligent interference (my cheating, in the case of the game) has had its hand in the game. Likewise, we can assume intelligent design was involved in the universe's creation. God, as far as this discussion is concerned, is simply an extra-universal being which brings about the physics and universe we live in.
@Frandysworld
@Frandysworld 9 жыл бұрын
The indoctrination part is the false dilemma that "if all else fails, therefore god." The answer could be a million different things and usually we follow the EVIDENCE even if it makes us feel bad or realize we have wasted our entire lives on another theory. would you accept an alien civilization outside of time that created the universe but doesn't play any part in its evolution and that there is no heaven nor hell? how about we being just a fluke? You keep coming back to god. Why? cause you already believe in god. Thats the intellectual laziness i was referring to you want the answer to be god so you jump through mental hoops just to make up theories that would agree with what you already believe. There were scientists including darwin and others that were deeply religious but despite the evidence not needing a god or gods still published and pursued their research wherever the evidence lead thats real. Im not indoctrinated. Anyone with a degree in those fields, with the proper training or anyone with the proper understanding of science regardless of their religion can perform those experiments themselves and come to the same conclusions. religions is not the same its all personal beliefs, emotions, where you're born, what ur parents were, hearsay and thousands of years old "holy books". Nothing new no evidence presented and ALL faith based. PS An extra universal being? why not a civilization? why not anything else how did you come up with that definition? like i said its all based on faith and mental gymnastics.
@35snarf
@35snarf 9 жыл бұрын
Frandysworld "how about we being just a fluke?" Well, that gets us nowhere, and it's really just a way to say 'I don't know or care.' Thus, it gives you no reason to berate someone about believing in God, since you offer no better excuse. -An alien civilization is contingent upon the universe's existence if they live within it, so it would not be possible for them to exist without creator. Sure, we could say they created us, but they require creator nonetheless. An _extra-universal_ "civilization" would be a series of gods, given they exist outside the universe. You are essentially appealing to polytheism. The issue with polytheism is that a series of gods cannot be simultaneously all-powerful and contingent upon each other. One of the leaders of this civilization would be the most powerful, and therefore *the* God. -An atheist is not free from biased thought simply because they do not believe in God. How is it not indoctrination to say the opposite: "If all else fails, there is no possibility of God." That's what your first comment on this thread essentially says. Yet, you've provided no evidence for that.

C'mon Tyson, don't give a sermon, and do not make Science a Religion. 'Calling' is strictly a religious phenomenon that takes away the decision from the One being called upon. It has nothing to do with Science. A Computer does not Call a student to become a Computer Programmer. Curiosity is the nature of Man that makes him/her a Scientist, not the 'Call' of an Invisible God who Created the World and all in it some 6,000 years ago. I chose to study Physics/Astronomy and then I chose to become a Computer Programmer. I made those decisions. No Computer came into my dreams calling me. KISS...keep it straight. Science is not Religion or vice versa.Please do not take away the power of making a decision from an individual. Let him/her decide.

I think the term "sermon" is used VERY loosely as a parallel term for science in defense of the sciences and science literacy. There is no preaching science, only teaching of it.

Religion is just a word for a set of beliefs one has about the great questions of life. The calling he speaks of, I think, is the same calling I have for the wilderness. I crave it, I need it, and I want to share my love of it with others.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the world. I am proud to be working towards making the world a richer place through studying science. Your experience isn't unlike my own. I think the world is definitely a richer place when more people can see the beauty of looking at how the world works. I didn't mean to imply that you were wrong for loving science. Believe me, I understand that love.

He's being honest and real. Telling someone not to be honest about his belief and feelings means you are petrified of what reality might truly be. Fear of your own discovery. Trying to scare people into a believe is not only foolish, it doesn't work. And if there is a power in the universe, I would like to believe it is an enlightened one - not one based on human being's flawed concepts of "good and evil." Remember - that's what humans often do. They use fear to try and get people to follow. Time to start evolving humanity beyond the cave.

I do not have the mathematical mind needed to pursue this career. But I all the more admire these kind of people. It doesn't matter if there are gods or spirits. They can exist. But what matters to me is what's here. What matters to me is the physical connection I have with this reality.

I have felt completely overwhelmed while getting a true Idea of just how very, very small my planet is, in a cosmic scale. Now I feel that it doesn't really matter. That I most definitely belong here in this universe, that I'm a true citizen, and it makes no difference how extraordinarily large it is. Unless I need to travel across it. Then it really sucks.

I don't know about anyone here but listening to that - I am not a religious person but I sometimes think that the relationship that you make with the universe using the power of thought, which I think is what he's talking about in this video (when he mentions "getting excited" about things that happen in the universe) is the same feeling as what a person feels when feeling some sort of presence of God - it's some kind of "pantheistic" view - so I don't know whether I can be classed as an atheist because I believe in God but that it's the universe and it's given rise to life that can then use the power of positive thoughts to then form a relationship/connection with the universe that has given rise to their consciousness - so in a way what religious people experience and what atheist experience is the same thing (an appreciation of what the universe has given them - the gift of life and the understanding of that gift) - just a theory that I think about - it's like an Einstein's understanding of what God is - so I think this presents an argument that atheism and theism are some how connected. Just throwing that out there! ;)

Dr. deGrasse is amazing! He inspires the imagination with such wonder and awe. I don't find his ruminations to be at all anti-religious. Religion unperverted by the base human desire to control and subjugate our fellow beings brings a valued mental and spiritual discipline to this sense of awe. deGrasse invokes the same discipline for Science. In a way he's constructing a nexus between Science and Religion that if it's properly understood will improve our world.
