I asked Neil a few years ago why Innes Book of Records isn't available on DVD. He said BBC wouldn't release the tapes. Maybe now (RIP Neil) they should do the honourable thing in memory of a genius. Lovely man.

This is quite extraordinary. My mother watched this and without knowing who Neil Innes is, said this guy should be more well known if h can produce work like this. I told her this was a spoof and she did not believe me. She said he could make a very good living singing like this all the time. My brother watched this convinced he was watching Dean Stockwell expand on his role in Blue Velvet. Neil does a brilliant job with this gem!!

Neil was right and the do dahs. Qe sneer at our stuffy parents "old hat jazz and swing". Big bands and trad jazz were too " toffy nosed". Funny how they then later say wow Jack Dorsey! SWING and aDuke Ellington and his String Quartet. CLEO Lane and Johhny Dankworth. Take 5. Etc etc etc. Then as my dad used to say. LOUDLY. " OH AYE.. then the little upstarts CHANGE THEIR TUNE alright". Beyond the C everyone likes to " Swing it out" like Loey Armstrong Coined. And put on a Penguin Suit. Best Theatre Ever with Neil at the Helm. He IS it.

The Innes Book of Records was one of those programmes which almost nobody saw, but which anyone who did will never forget. Absolutely brilliant but just a bit too quirky for most people's taste. As others have said, this is such a good song in its own right - and so well performed - that the element of parody is lost. Except maybe in the introduction - 'you know - not so long ago - and it's been very lucky for me' which nicely spears all those 'sincere' showbiz intros.

@John2Ward7 жыл бұрын
Yes. John Altman was indeed brilliant at all his arrangements for the show. For another example of sheer brilliance check out "Concrete Jungle Boy" and "Time to Kill". You'll probably need tissues or a hanky for the latter. There are plenty of others from the series I could reel off the top of my head.

Is it Law in England Scotland and Wales since King Croasus that it is the official party line that all music arrangement 'lot" are always called John? Like Hal.used to Be Dave and is now " "Not sure about THAT Ben". Seems to be a space oddyty in the true image of the world jigsaw. Usually just lazy naive media reps. I prefer Neils perfect presentation. As HE IS. Other people can mess things up.. like the BEEB.. tone def.

If you didn't know this was a parody you could mistake it for the real thing. In a way it's weird, because the mimicry is so close it ceases to be a send up and asks to be judged as a crooner's show-stopper in its own right: rather as some of the Rutles tracks make you wonder why they're not on real Bealtes albums. I admire Neil Innes hugely but he's not cruel enough to be a GREAT parodist. He falls in love with whatever song type he's copying.
@tikaanipippin3 жыл бұрын
It's not mimicry so much as a loving recreation with new words, melodies, and the parody is almost entirely in the meticulously studied and polished musical arrangement. It has been said that the Rutles is not a parody of the Beatles, rather than that of George Martin's excellent arrangements. When Neil Innes performed his own songs, for instance on chat shows, he even parodies himself, and his original performance, equipped only with a guitar and an audience, as on here from about 9 minutes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYTGmWZ5hNOHeNE
